Lost in Luang Prabang: Sticky Rice, Sleep Deprivation, and a Whole Lotta Humidity

okay, so. luang prabang. where do i even begin? i’m pretty sure my brain is currently operating on approximately three percent battery life, fueled solely by strong coffee and the vague memory of sunsets. i just checked and it's…a damp hug out there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. seriously, the humidity is a thing. like, you walk outside and immediately feel like you’re swimming in a lukewarm bowl of noodles.

I’m a touring session drummer, you see. Usually, i’m bouncing between soundchecks and smoky bars, but this time, my agent decided i needed “cultural enrichment.” So here i am, surrounded by temples and monks and the most delicious sticky rice i’ve ever tasted. It’s…a lot. A lot of gold, a lot of orange robes, a lot of quiet mornings punctuated by the chanting of monks. It’s beautiful, don’t get me wrong, but it’s also…intense.

I spent a ridiculous amount of time wandering around the *night market. Seriously, it’s a labyrinth of handicrafts and street food. I bought a hand-woven scarf that probably cost me a week’s worth of ramen money, but hey, it’s a souvenir, right? I also tried some…questionable…insect snacks. Let’s just say i won’t be adding those to my regular diet. Someone told me that the fried grasshoppers are surprisingly good with chili sauce. They lied.

“Apparently, if you don’t clap your hands properly during the alms giving ceremony, you’ll have bad luck for seven years. Seven years! Who needs that kind of pressure?”

I’ve been staying at a little guesthouse near the
Mekong River. It’s basic, but the view is incredible. The owner, a lovely woman named Dao, keeps offering me herbal tea and telling me stories about her grandchildren. It’s…sweet. If you get bored, Vang Vieng and Nong Khiaw are just a short drive away, both supposedly offering stunning scenery and a more adventurous vibe. I might check them out if i ever manage to string together a coherent thought.

I overheard some drunk tourists complaining about the lack of air conditioning. Honestly, they should just embrace the humidity. It’s part of the experience. I’m trying to find a decent coffee shop - the instant stuff they serve everywhere is…tragic. I found one place on TripAdvisor (https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurants-g296236-Luang_Prabang.html) that supposedly has decent espresso, but it’s a bit of a trek.

“Don’t even think about renting a scooter without insurance. The roads are…interesting, to say the least. And the police are everywhere.”

I’m trying to document everything with my camera, but honestly, my brain is too fried to be creative. I’m just snapping pictures of temples and sticky rice and hoping for the best. I found a local photography group on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/groups/luangprabangphotography/) - maybe i’ll join and get some tips.

I also checked out the Royal Palace Museum (https://www.lonelyplanet.com/laos/luang-prabang/attractions/royal-palace-museum/a/poi-sig/403888). It was…okay. A lot of gold, a lot of velvet, a lot of stuff i didn’t really understand. I heard that the locals consider it a sacred place, so i tried to be respectful. I’m also looking for a good place to get a traditional Lao massage. Yelp (https://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=lao+massage&find_loc=Luang+Prabang,+Laos) has a few options, but the reviews are…mixed.

Honestly, i’m just trying to survive. The heat, the humidity, the constant chanting…it’s a lot to take in. But the sticky rice is
really* good. And the sunsets are pretty spectacular. I’m going to try and find a quiet spot by the river and just…be. For a little while, anyway. Then it’s back to the drums and the smoky bars. But for now, luang prabang is my chaotic, humid, and surprisingly charming reality.
