Lost in Lisbon: A Whirlwind of Tiles & Feels
okay, so lisbon. where do i even begin? i'm pretty sure the numbers 3116553 and 1724443143 are just the chaotic energy of this city distilled into digits. i landed yesterday afternoon, and the air… it’s thick. like someone bottled sunshine and a hint of saltwater. the temp is 18.22C, feels like 17.14C, with a pressure of 1016 and humidity at a surprising 40%. definitely not the dry heat i'm used to.
first impression? a beautiful mess. the buildings are all pastel colors, crammed together like they’re sharing secrets. the streets? steep. seriously, my calves are screaming. i swear, there are more hills than level ground in this entire place. i'm trying to embrace it though. it's part of the charm, right?
i’m staying in Alfama, which is… an experience. think winding alleyways, laundry hanging off balconies, and the constant strumming of a Portuguese guitar. it’s loud, it’s vibrant, and it’s completely disorienting in the best way possible. honestly, it feels like stepping back in time. i checked the forecast - it’s mostly sunny today, which is great! i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.
so far, i've mostly been wandering. got completely lost (multiple times). stumbled upon a tiny tasca (that’s a little restaurant) where i had the best pasteis de nata of my life. seriously, these custard tarts are life-changing. i'm thinking of opening a pasteis de nata smuggling operation back home. just kidding… mostly.
i spent a bit of time at the São Jorge Castle - the views of the city are incredible. you can see the Tagus river snaking its way through everything. apparently, someone told me that the castle has some seriously spooky stories attached to it. i'm not usually into ghost tours, but… hey, why not?
*Local Tip: Don't even think* about wearing heels. Seriously. you will regret it. comfy shoes are a must. also, be prepared for crowds, especially in the popular areas.
i popped into a little shop earlier and picked up a secondhand book on Portuguese folklore. i'm ridiculously drawn to history, so it's right up my alley. i heard that the Time Out Market Lisboa is a great place to grab lunch, but it's super touristy - someone warned me it can get overwhelming. i'm contemplating checking out LX Factory instead - apparently, it’s more of a local hangout with cool shops and restaurants. you can find more info on Lisbon travel guides like TripAdvisor.
the neighbors here are… lively. a lot of older folks chatting on doorsteps, kids playing in the alleys, the smell of grilling sardines wafting through the air. it's a really warm, welcoming vibe. if you get bored, Porto is just a short train ride away. i'm thinking of making a day trip there.
i’m definitely going to try and catch some live music tonight. i saw a flyer for a Fado performance - that’s traditional Portuguese music, and i’ve heard it’s incredibly moving. i’m also planning on checking out some of the street art - i saw a few cool murals while wandering around. i’m always up for a good dose of urban creativity.
