Lisbon's Echoes: A Botanist's Dizzying Detour

okay, so. lisbon. right? i wasn’t planning on lisbon. i was chasing a rumour about a rare orchid, Dactylorhiza foliosa, supposedly thriving in some abandoned greenhouses near… well, that’s not important. the point is, i ended up here, and it’s… a lot.

I just checked and it’s drizzling, a sort of persistent, damp hug that clings to everything. not exactly ideal for orchid hunting, but honestly, it adds to the atmosphere. it’s like the city itself is exhaling a sigh.

I’ve been wandering around Alfama, getting hopelessly lost in the labyrinthine streets. it’s beautiful, obviously, all those tiled facades and wrought-iron balconies, but it’s also… intense. the smell of grilled sardines is everywhere. i’m not complaining, mind you, i just wasn’t prepared for the sheer olfactory assault.

Someone told me that the best way to experience Alfama is to just… let yourself get lost. apparently, that’s how you stumble upon the hidden courtyards and the tiny, family-run restaurants serving the real portuguese food. i’m trying to follow that advice, but my internal compass is clearly broken. i keep ending up near the same fado bar, which isn’t bad, just… repetitive.

I did find a little shop selling antique botanical prints. seriously, a dream. I almost bought everything. ended up with a gorgeous lithograph of a Nepenthes pitcher plant. it’s currently residing precariously on top of my backpack.

I overheard some tourists complaining about the hills. honestly, they’re part of the charm! it’s a workout, sure, but the views from the top are worth it. plus, it burns off all those pastel de natas. speaking of which, i need to find another one. urgently.

I’m staying in a tiny Airbnb near the São Jorge Castle. the view from my window is… interesting. i can see a whole flock of pigeons arguing over a discarded croissant. it’s surprisingly entertaining. if you get bored, Sintra is just a short train ride away - apparently, the gardens there are incredible. check out TripAdvisor for some ideas. https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g183083-Activities-Sintra_Lisbon_District_Central_Portugal.html

I also stumbled upon a really cool street art scene in the Mouraria district. some seriously talented people are working here. I’m trying to document it all, but my camera battery is dying. I’ll upload some photos later. Yelp has some good recommendations for cafes in the area if you need a caffeine fix. https://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=coffee&find_loc=Mouraria,+Lisbon,+Portugal

I heard that the LX Factory is a must-see. apparently, it’s a converted industrial complex filled with shops, restaurants, and art studios. sounds like my kind of chaos. I’m planning to head there tomorrow. I’m also checking out some local forums for tips on finding wild plants around the city. https://lisboalovers.com/

Honestly, this trip has been a beautiful mess. I didn’t find my orchid, but I found something else entirely - a city that’s both ancient and vibrant, chaotic and charming. and a whole lot of pastel de natas. i’m pretty sure i’ll be back.

pro-tip: wear comfortable shoes. seriously. your feet will thank you.
