Lisbon Lost and Found: A Chaotic Chronicle
okay, so let's just say i landed in lisbon with a suitcase full of questionable decisions and a phone battery that’s currently staging a rebellion. i just checked and it's… there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. the air smells like salt and something vaguely floral, maybe jasmine? feels like the kind of place you get lost in, and honestly? i'm kind of loving it.
*281102 - that’s the date, right? feels like a lifetime ago even though it’s only been a few days. and 1818109072? probably a random string i saw on a cafe sign. no real meaning, just a number humming quietly in the background of this whole adventure.
my first impression? utter sensory overload. the streets are a kaleidoscope of pastel buildings, wrought iron balconies overflowing with herbs, and the constant sound of laughter and chatter. and the smell...oh god, the smell. it’s a weird symphony of grilled sardines, pastries, and something earthy i can’t quite place. i'm pretty sure i walked right into a giant stack of tiles - classic lisbon.
i’ve been trying to navigate using google maps, which is basically a cruel joke. the streets wind and twist like a drunken sailor.
Someone told me that the best way to get around is to just wander, get intentionally lost, and trust your gut. so that’s what i’ve been doing.
gear list (aka what i crammed into my backpack):
a seriously worn-out pair of walking shoes (*essential)
a ridiculously oversized scarf (for when it gets chilly, which it does - seriously, the weather is moody)
a notebook and pen (for documenting my descent into madness)
a water bottle (hydration is key, even in the heat)
a small backpack (that’s constantly threatening to fall apart)
pro-tip: don’t be afraid to ask for directions. even if they’re delivered in broken english and a conspiratorial whisper.
i heard that the tram 28 is a must-do, but someone warned me that it’s a chaotic experience. apparently, it’s packed tighter than a sardine can and the driver isn’t exactly known for his patience. i’m planning on taking it tomorrow, but i’m bracing myself for the ride. i'm gonna ask about the best viewpoints on that trip at the LX Factory, a converted industrial complex that's supposed to be a haven for artists and designers.
it’s also a little unsettling, actually. i heard that there’s a hidden community of… well, let’s just say eccentric people living in the hills above the city. someone told me that they’re fiercely protective of their privacy and aren’t easily impressed. i’m trying to avoid wandering too far off the beaten path, but the call of the unknown is strong.
i’ve been grabbing coffee at a little cafe in the Alfama district - the oldest part of the city. the coffee is strong, the pastries are delicious, and the atmosphere is… well, it’s just electric. it’s got this kind of old-world charm that's really captivating. there’s something magical about sipping coffee while watching the sun set over the Tagus River.
i’m still trying to figure out where to stay, but i'm leaning towards a guesthouse in the Alfama. i’ve seen some great options on TripAdvisor and Yelp. if you get bored, Cascais is just a short train ride away - a lovely seaside town with beaches and charming cafes. and, hey, if you're feeling adventurous, there's a hiking trail that leads to a viewpoint overlooking the entire city.

i think i’m starting to understand what lisbon is all about. it’s a city of contrasts - ancient and modern, chaotic and serene, traditional and edgy. it’s a place where you can get lost and find yourself all at the same time. i’m definitely not sure what the future holds, but i’m determined to soak it all in.
