Legazpi: Chasing Volcanoes and Seafood Dreams
legazpi is one of those places that sneaks up on you. you’re driving down this coastal road, thinking about whether you packed enough sunscreen, and then boom-there’s mayon volcano, all perfect cone and impossible symmetry, like it’s posing for a postcard it never agreed to. the weather’s sitting at a toasty 30.73°C right now, but with that humidity, it feels more like you’re walking through soup. i just checked and it’s hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk out there, hope you like that kind of thing.
i heard from a tricycle driver that the best way to see the city is at sunrise, when the volcano isn’t hiding behind clouds and the streets are still half-asleep. he also warned me that the Cagsawa ruins get mobbed by 9 a.m., so if you’re into photos without strangers’ elbows in them, you’ll want to beat the tour buses. someone told me that the local Bicol Express is so spicy it’ll make you question all your life choices-but in a good way, apparently.
if you get bored, naga and tabaco are just a short drive away, and both have their own weird charms. naga’s got that old Spanish plaza vibe, while tabaco feels like a fishing village that forgot to update its wardrobe since the 70s.
for food, everyone raves about the seafood at the Legazpi Boulevard. i overheard a tourist say the shrimp there was so fresh it practically waved back. i’m not sure about that, but the grilled squid was definitely still twitching when it hit the plate. for something less adventurous, there’s a little bakery near the cathedral that does these soft cheese rolls-locals call them “pandesal with a secret.”
i’ve been told the nightlife here is more “casual drink by the bay” than “all-night dance party,” but there’s a rooftop bar near the city center where you can sip a cold San Miguel and pretend you’re in a travel commercial. the view of the volcano at night, when it’s lit up by nearby towns, is worth the slightly inflated beer prices.
anyway, here’s where i’m roughly at:
and because no one trusts a blogger without pics, here’s what i’ve been staring at:
if you’re into volcanoes, spicy food, and humidity that makes your shirt stick to you like a second skin, legazpi might just be your next stop. or maybe it’s just mine. either way, i’m still here, sweating and smiling, trying to figure out if that volcano ever takes a day off.
