Kyiv Chaos: 1188569 & A Whole Lotta Grey (But Also Rain!)

ok, so kyiv. where do i even begin? i’m a freelance photographer, and honestly, this trip has been…a lot. the numbers 1188569 and 1050090584 popped into my head this morning - felt random, like coordinates for a hidden coffee shop or something. nope. turns out they’re just…numbers. but they sparked something.

temp: 25.85°C, feels like 26.29°C. the air is thick - like you can almost taste the history. 69% humidity, so definitely a damp kind of heat. it’s not oppressive, more like a constant, quiet weight. the sky is this weird, swirling grey - the kind that makes everything look like a vintage photograph. i just checked, and it’s… overcast, there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.

my little Airbnb is tucked away in a residential area. the neighbors are mostly older folks - lots of window boxes bursting with flowers that somehow look even more vibrant against the grey backdrop. if you get bored, Lviv is just a short train ride away. people keep telling me to check out the Podil district; supposedly it’s where all the cool cafes are. i’m still on the hunt for a decent chai latte.

Kyiv street scene

people seem… resilient here. there’s a quiet dignity in the way they go about their day. i heard that the best place for pierogi is a tiny hole-in-the-wall place on Banka Street - someone told me that… I should definitely check it out. also, someone warned me about the taxi drivers - apparently, a lot of them try to overcharge tourists. good to know.

*Gear-wise:
Camera (duh)
Plenty of memory cards (you’ll need them)
Portable charger - power outages happen (apparently)
Comfortable walking shoes - you’ll be doing a lot of walking
Umbrella - just in case this grey keeps up

seriously though, the architecture is astounding. you’ll stumble upon these grand, ornate buildings that look like they’ve stepped straight out of a history book. *St. Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery is a must-see. i’m planning to visit the National Museum of Ukraine - it’s supposed to have an incredible collection of artifacts. i found some interesting resources on Ukrainian history over on Ukraine History Online.

Kyiv architecture

i spent yesterday wandering around
Khreshchatyk Street*, the main thoroughfare. it's a bit of a chaotic mix of old and new, grand old buildings alongside modern shops and cafes. i did overhear a couple of locals talking about the upcoming festival - they said it’s usually a huge deal, with street performers and food stalls. i heard that…entry is free, but you need to book a spot in advance!

and the noise! it's a constant hum - car horns, chatter, distant music. the air smells faintly of diesel and something sweet, maybe baking bread? it’s oddly comforting, this low-level background hum.

Kyiv cityscape

i'm heading to a small local craft market later. i’m always on the lookout for unique souvenirs. i saw a stall selling hand-painted ceramics - really beautiful stuff. you can check out some Ukrainian crafts on Etsy if you're looking for something to bring home.

this city feels like it's holding its breath, waiting for something. there's a palpable sense of strength and determination here, layered beneath the quiet moments. it's… complicated. but definitely worth the trip. and definitely worth the chai latte hunt.

i’m planning to check out a ghost tour tonight. it feels appropriate, somehow. you can find some options on TripAdvisor.

anyway, back to exploring. wish me luck! or at least, wish me a decent cup of tea.
