Kansas City, Missouri: Cold Coffee & Concrete Angels

okay, so i just stumbled into Kansas City, and honestly? it’s…a mood. a very specific, slightly damp, concrete-heavy mood. i’m an *illustrator, usually chasing light in warmer places, but a gig popped up here and, well, rent’s rent.

I just checked and it’s… hovering around freezing, with a wind that feels personally offended by my existence. The weather report said 3 degrees, but
feels like -1.94? Yeah, that tracks. It’s the kind of cold that seeps into your bones and makes you question all your life choices. The pressure’s a bit wonky too, 1016, which probably explains why my ears keep popping. Humidity’s at 59, which honestly feels optimistic.

I’m staying in this little Airbnb in the Crossroads Arts District. The walls are thin, and i swear my neighbor is practicing the tuba at 3 am. If you need a place to stay, check out TripAdvisor Kansas City. Honestly, the tuba isn’t
that bad. It’s…character. The people around here seem to be mostly artists and people who look like they’ve accepted their fate.

Someone told me that the
barbecue is legendary, but you have to be prepared to wait in line for hours. Like, hours. I heard Arthur Bryant’s is the place to go, but apparently, it’s a bit of a tourist trap now. I’m thinking Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que might be a safer bet. Yelp has some pretty heated debates about it.

I spent yesterday wandering around, sketching. The architecture is…intense. Lots of brick, lots of art deco. There’s this weird obsession with angels, too. Statues everywhere. It’s kinda creepy, kinda beautiful. I found this amazing little vintage shop on Southwest Boulevard. It’s called Retro Inferno and it’s crammed full of treasures. I snagged a killer 70s jumpsuit for like, twenty bucks. Score.

I overheard a conversation at a
coffee shop* (which, by the way, is essential for survival in this weather) about the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Apparently, it’s free and has a pretty impressive collection. Someone warned me not to go to the 18th & Vine Jazz District at night, said it can get a little sketchy. But honestly, I’m kinda intrigued. Maybe I’ll be brave.

I’m trying to find some good live music. I saw a flyer for a show at The Blue Room, which looks promising. Check out their calendar. I’m also thinking of checking out the City Market. I need groceries, and apparently, it’s a good place to people-watch.

Honestly, Kansas City is growing on me. It’s not pretty, it’s not glamorous, but it’s…real. It’s got a grit to it that I appreciate. Plus, the people are surprisingly friendly, even if they do seem slightly resigned to the cold. If you’re looking for a place that’s a little off the beaten path, a little weird, and a lot of fun, give Kansas City a shot. Just bring a really, really warm coat. And maybe earplugs for the tuba.
