Kansas City: A Caffeine-Fueled, Weather-Confused Adventure

okay, so i landed in kansas city with zero expectations and somehow ended up falling in love with the chaos. the weather here? it's like it can't make up its mind-one minute you're freezing, the next you're sweating. i just checked and it's 6.25°c right now, but feels like 5.03°c, so yeah, bring a jacket...or maybe don't, because by noon it could be 8.65°c and you'll regret it. the humidity's sitting at 72%, which makes everything feel a bit damp and weird, but honestly, that's part of the charm.

i heard from a barista at *the roasterie (which, by the way, is a must-visit if you're into coffee that punches you in the face with flavor) that the best way to experience kansas city is to just wander. so i did. and let me tell you, this city is full of surprises. like, did you know there's a whole neighborhood dedicated to jazz? i stumbled into the 18th & vine district and it was like stepping into a time machine. someone told me that charlie parker used to play here, and now i'm convinced ghosts of saxophones are still floating around.

but here's the thing-kansas city isn't just about jazz. it's also about
barbecue. i mean, i knew that going in, but i didn't realize how serious they are about it. i overheard a local say, "if you haven't had burnt ends, you haven't lived," and now i'm obsessed. joe's kansas city bbq is the spot, apparently, but there's also q39 and slap's bbq if you're feeling adventurous. just don't ask me to pick a favorite-i'm still recovering from the meat coma.

and speaking of food, let's talk about
the streetcar. it's free, it's cute, and it'll take you all over downtown. i hopped on just to see where it went and ended up at the nelson-atkins museum of art. the building itself is stunning, and the collection? chef's kiss. but what really got me was the shuttlecocks on the lawn. like, who even thinks of that? kansas city, that's who.

now, if you're the type who likes to escape the city for a bit,
lawrence and topeka are just a short drive away. someone mentioned that lawrence has this weird, artsy vibe that's totally different from kansas city, and i'm already planning a day trip. also, if you're into history, westport is full of old buildings and stories about the wild west. i heard a rumor that it's haunted, but i didn't stick around long enough to find out.

one last thing-if you're planning to visit, don't sleep on the
kansas city public library*. the parking garage is designed to look like a giant bookshelf, and it's the most instagrammable thing i've seen in ages. also, the library itself is cozy and perfect for hiding from the unpredictable weather.

kansas city, man. it's messy, it's loud, it's confusing, and i kind of love it. here's a map to help you get lost:

and because no blog post is complete without photos, here are a few shots i found that kinda capture the vibe:

People gather inside a restaurant with an open door.

a hot air balloon in the sky

USA waving flag

if you're still reading this, you're probably as weirdly obsessed with kansas city as i am now. go forth and explore, but maybe check the weather first. seriously.
