kamloops: where the snow falls like it’s judging your life choices
i was supposed to be somewhere else but ended up here in kamloops because my flight got rerouted by a rogue seagull. honestly? it’s not the worst destination. i just checked and it's... there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. the air tastes like frozen pizza boxes and irony.
the weather is a whole mood. -1.94°c feels like someone spilled their ice cube tray into a blender. i’m dressed in a down coat that’s either a winter survival tool or a fashion statement declaring ‘i don’t care.’ either way, it’s working. i just saw a man walking around in jeans and a hoodie, which either means he’s a local legend or he’s a tourist who forgot to migrate south. either way, respect.
neighbors? well, if you pass a cluster of tents near the river, ask them about the ‘mystery fog’ they talk about. some say it’s magic. others swear it’s just the town’s collective sadness. either way, it’s gotta be checked out. if you get bored, kamloops is just a short drive away from where the volcano last hiccupped. not sure if that’s a real thing or a myth, but the locals know either way.
reviews? let’s call them ‘overheard rumors.’ someone told me that this coffee shop here brews beans so strong it’ll wake a dead guy. another drunk hiker warned me about the bridges-they ‘sag like a person who’s given up on life.’ i haven’t died yet, so… thanks for the warning. i heard that the local library has a vault with old maps, but you need to solve a riddle to get in. the librarian said it’s probably easier to just ask google.
i grabbed a scone from that place on 4th avenue-i’ve heard mixed things. some say it’s divine. others claim it’s just a pastry covered in existential dread. i’m in the middle. it was okay. really okay. would i recommend? yeah, if you like being confused by your own taste buds.
the weirdest thing here is the traffic lights. they flicker like they’re trying to tell you a secret. i took a photo of one last night. it looked like a neon dictionary page. here it is:
another shot of the snow covering everything. it’s like a white blanket someone dropped on the city.
i’ve been out here a while. the internet’s spotty, so i’ve resorted to reading blogs. one claimed that if you walk the riverbank at dawn, you’ll meet spirits. another said the best place to hide is in a abandoned church. i’m gonna test this later. maybe.
need help? check these out:
- tripadvisor page for kamloops cafes
- yelp review of the local library
- a forum thread about the fog
anyway. tonight’s plan? survive the cold, meet a spirit, or at least find a place with a working heater. let’s see what happens.
