Guadalajara's Got Grit (and a Seriously Sticky Mango)
okay, so, i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm café de olla. 3589289… seriously, what even is that number? it just… stuck with me. and 1320110674? don’t ask. it’s like a persistent mosquito buzzing in my brain. the air here in Guadalajara is thick, you know? like, you can almost taste the humidity. it’s 33.89 feels like 34.09, temp min 33.89, temp max 33.89, pressure 1008, humidity 35, sea level 1008, grnd level 960. yeah, that’s the science. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.
I landed yesterday and immediately felt like i’d stumbled into a really intense telenovela. the colors are insane - these crumbling buildings painted in the most aggressively cheerful shades of turquoise and pink. it’s… a lot. i’m staying in the Zona Rosa, which is basically a chaotic explosion of street food stalls and vintage shops. it’s loud, it’s sweaty, and it’s perfect.
I spent the morning wandering around the Plaza de la Liberación, dodging mariachi bands and trying to figure out if the fountain was actually supposed to be that aggressively ornate. someone told me that the best tacos al pastor are at El Huequito, but i also heard that the guy who runs it has a serious gambling problem. i’m leaning towards the tacos. gotta risk it for the reward, right?
I found this amazing little record store - ‘Discos del Sol’ - tucked away down a side street. the owner, a guy named Ricardo, looked like he hadn’t slept in a decade and was absolutely obsessed with obscure Mexican rock bands. he kept rambling about ‘the golden age of Guadalajara’ and ‘the sound of rebellion.’ it was… captivating. He also gave me a map of the city, drawn on a napkin, with little stick figures pointing out his favorite spots. It’s probably wildly inaccurate, but it’s charming.
Speaking of charming, my neighbors are… interesting. There’s this family who plays trumpets at 6 am every morning, and this guy who collects bottle caps. if you get bored, Guadalajara is just a short drive away, to places like Tequila and Tlaquepaque. Seriously, Tlaquepaque is a whole vibe. It’s like a craft fair exploded and then decided to open a bunch of artisan shops. I bought a ridiculously oversized sombrero. Don’t judge.
I checked Yelp and TripAdvisor - someone told me that the rooftop bar at the Hotel Matilda has the best views, but I heard that it’s ridiculously overpriced. I’m going to try to find a cheaper spot with a view. Maybe a random plaza?
I spent the afternoon exploring the Mercado San Juan, which is basically a sensory overload. There were piles of exotic fruits I couldn’t even name, vendors shouting prices, and the smell of spices hanging in the air. I tried a mango that was so sticky, it practically glued itself to my fingers. It was… intense. I’m pretty sure I’m going to be finding mango bits in my hair for the next week.
I’m trying to capture the feeling of this place, you know? It’s not about pretty pictures or perfectly curated Instagram feeds. It’s about the grit, the chaos, the unexpected moments. It’s about getting lost in the streets and stumbling upon something amazing. I’m thinking of starting a series on my Instagram called ‘Guadalajara’s Secrets’ - documenting the weird and wonderful things I find.
Seriously, if you’re looking for a place that’s a little bit rough around the edges, a little bit chaotic, and a whole lot of fun, Guadalajara is your spot. Just… bring a stain remover. And maybe a strong cup of coffee.
