gen. santos city: coffee, chaos, and coconut groves

so there i was, stepping off the bus into the thick, sticky air of gen. santos city-aka "gen san" if you're trying to sound like you belong. the kind of humidity that makes your shirt stick to your back before you even find your hostel. i just checked and it's 23.75°C with 89% humidity there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.

this place isn't exactly on every tourist's radar, which is exactly why i came. no "heart of" nonsense, just real streets, real people, and a whole lot of tuna. yeah, they call it the tuna capital of the philippines, and the smell of grilled fish hits you before you even hit the market.

*day one: wandered into a tiny coffee shop called kape't tingin (google it, seriously) where the barista told me the owner roasts beans from the nearby highlands. "best in mindanao," she said, and i wasn't about to argue after that first sip. overheard some locals gossiping about a hidden beach called tinoto, said it's quieter than white island but harder to reach. worth it, they claimed.

day two: rented a scooter (pro tip: rent from scooter central gen san on facebook, cheaper than the guys at the terminal) and zipped out to lake sebu. the road's a bit rough, but the views? chef's kiss. stopped at a roadside stall for tilapia fresh from the lake. five bucks, and i was stuffed.

weather rant: it's not the heat, it's the humidity. you step outside and immediately reconsider all life choices. but hey, that's the tropics. bring light clothes, a reusable water bottle, and a sense of humor.

random overheard rumor: "don't go to the general santos city museum on mondays, they said it's haunted by the ghost of a disgruntled curator." i didn't test that theory, but it's a fun story to tell back home.

if you get bored,
davao and cagayan de oro are just a short drive away, though honestly, gen san's got enough going on to keep you busy for a week.

final thoughts:* gen. santos city isn't polished, it's not "instagrammable" in the usual way, but that's what makes it special. it's raw, it's real, and it's got a soul you won't find in the big tourist traps. go before everyone else discovers it.
