Fukuoka Nights and Noodle Dreams
fukuoka hit different this time. the weather was weird-like 13°c but felt colder somehow, 42% humidity making everything slightly sticky. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. the city sprawls along the coast with that perfect mix of neon and old-school japan that makes you want to stay forever.
first night, stumbled into a tiny *ramen shop in nakasu. the guy next to me, clearly three beers deep, insisted i try the tonkotsu with extra garlic. "best in fukuoka," he slurred. i believed him. it was. someone told me that the line at ichiran is worth it only if you're into that solitary dining experience-heard mixed things about it actually.
roamed around tenjin district where department stores glow brighter than the moon. grabbed coffee at a place where the barista spent five minutes explaining their single-origin beans from yame. if you get bored, nagasaki and kumamoto are just a short drive away. totally worth the trip if you've got time.
the canal city complex is exactly what it sounds like-a city within a city. found this weird cat cafe* on the third floor where the cats clearly judged everyone. check out tripadvisor's top things to do if you want the tourist-approved version.
ate soba at 2am because that's what you do in fukuoka. the vending machines here are next level-like, you can get hot soup from a machine. wandered back to my capsule hotel feeling like i'd only scratched the surface. fukuoka keeps its secrets well, but if you listen to enough drunk locals, you'll find the good stuff.
