Elazig: Where My Camera Fingers Froze Off

well hello there, frozen traveler. just landed in elazig and let me tell you, this cold is no joke. i looked at the weather and it's out here playing hide-and-seek with your bones, real shiver-inducing stuff. if you're into that kind of atmospheric suffering, then by all means, pack thermals. as a freelance photographer chasing moody light, this was either a genius move or a cry for help-jury's still out.

first thing i noticed? how the city looks like it got photoshopped into existence. those ochre buildings against the gray sky? chef's kiss. though my fingers were too numb to actually operate my camera, which is a problem when your job is literally holding a camera. had to shoot with mittens on. pro move? maybe. effective? debatable.

wandered toward the bazaar district because every photographer swears by 'authentic local color.' turns out 'color' here means piles of dried spices that made my eyes water more than the cold. someone told me that the best baklava in eastern anatolia is hidden in a side alley near the copper market. i also heard from a guy who smelled like rakı that the secret ingredient is goat cheese? questionable, but i’ll try anything once.

when the wind picked up, i ducked into a cafƩ that smelled like burning coal and desperation. ordered something called 'iraq tea' which tasted like sweet regret. the owner grumbled about tourists ruining his 'peaceful zone' while charging me for an extra sugar cube. local hospitality at its finest.

had to escape the cold eventually, so i checked out some nearby villages. when you're over elazig's frozen charms, you can take a spin toward keban reservoir for some icy landscapes or maden for abandoned thermal baths. basically, if you get cabin fever, just drive until the scenery changes.

before i left, a drunk guy in a sheepskin jacket warned me about 'ghosts in the hills.' probably just hypothermia-induced hallucinations, but now i'm kinda creeped out. still, the light here? unreal. worth frostbite? maybe. you can judge for yourself at TripAdvisor's Elazig page or this local forum.

packing tip: hand warmers. lots of them. and maybe a therapist.
