Eindhoven After Dark (and a Lot of Rain)
okay, so eindhoven. it’s…a thing. i wasn’t really planning on eindhoven, honestly. it was a last-minute detour after a gig in cologne fell through. the drummer’s amp blew, the venue smelled like old socks, and i just needed out.
and now here i am, nursing a lukewarm coffee and trying to make sense of this city. it’s all angles and steel, which, as a former session drummer, i kinda dig. it’s got a rhythm, a weird, industrial heartbeat. i just checked and it’s…drizzling sideways, with a hint of existential dread, hope you like that kind of thing.
my airbnb is above a bakery, which is both a blessing and a curse. the smell of fresh bread is amazing, but it’s also making me question all my life choices. i’m supposed to be “finding myself” on this tour, not just inhaling carbs. the weather data says it’s 16.43 celsius, feels like 15.23, pressure’s at 1024, humidity’s a reasonable 42%, and the sea level is…well, who cares about sea level when you’re surrounded by concrete? the ground level is 1016, if anyone is keeping track.
spent most of the day wandering around the *Strijp-S district. it’s this old philips factory area that’s been turned into a sort of creative hub. lots of design shops, cafes, and people pretending to be very important. i overheard someone complaining about the lack of “authentic dutch charm.” honestly, i think they were just missing canals. you can find some good reviews on TripAdvisor if you're into that sort of thing.
someone told me that the Van Abbemuseum is worth checking out, but only if you’re into really, really modern art. like, the kind of art that makes you question reality. apparently, there’s a cafe inside with decent coffee, which is always a plus.
my neighbors seem to be mostly students and people who work in tech. if you get bored, tilburg and den bosch are just a short train ride away. i tried to find a good record store, but no luck so far. i did stumble upon a vintage clothing shop, though, which is always a win. it’s called Episode. seriously, check it out. i scored a killer leather jacket for like, thirty euros.
i heard from a bartender that there’s a secret underground music scene here, but you have to know the right people to get in. he winked a lot while telling me this. i suspect he was just trying to sell me another beer.
overall, eindhoven is…unexpected. it’s not picturesque, it’s not charming, but it’s got a vibe. a weird, slightly unsettling vibe. i’m not sure i’d come back specifically to* eindhoven, but i’m glad i ended up here. it’s a good reminder that sometimes the best adventures are the ones you don’t plan. you can find more local info on Eindhoven News. and if you're looking for a place to eat, Yelp has some suggestions, though take them with a grain of salt. i also found this local forum which might be useful.
