Dust & Static: A Week in Asheville, NC

okay, so i’m pretty sure i’m running on caffeine and regret. 4452808 and 1840015355 - don’t ask. it’s just… a thing. i landed in Asheville yesterday, and honestly, it’s like stepping into a really cool, slightly unsettling indie film. the air smells like pine needles and something vaguely fermented, which is a plus, let’s be real.

The weather’s… there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. 58 degrees, feels like 66, pressure’s hovering around 1028, humidity’s clinging to everything like a damp blanket - it’s a whole mood. i checked Yelp and apparently, ‘Biscuit Head’ is the place to be for, like, aggressively good biscuits. someone told me that the gravy is a religion. i’m intrigued.

I’m staying in a little Airbnb downtown, it’s got this weird, slightly crooked vibe, like it was built by a really enthusiastic but slightly disorganized architect. the walls are painted this aggressively cheerful shade of turquoise, which is… a lot. the landlord, Silas, is a retired banjo player and he keeps leaving me cryptic notes about the ‘spirits of the mountain.’ i’m not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.

Spent the afternoon wandering around the River Arts District. it’s basically a bunch of converted warehouses filled with artists’ studios. it’s chaotic, in the best way. saw some seriously wild pottery, some unsettling sculptures made of found objects, and a guy painting portraits of squirrels. i bought a tiny ceramic mushroom - felt like a necessary purchase.

Checked out the Folk Art Center - it’s a tourist trap, sure, but they have some genuinely beautiful handcrafted items. i snagged a hand-woven scarf, mostly because it matched my boots. i overheard a drunk advice session at a bar last night - apparently, the best way to see Asheville is by hitchhiking. don’t do that. seriously.

Speaking of bars, ‘The Funkatorium’ is a must. it’s a meadery, and they take it very seriously. the guy behind the bar, Bartholomew, has this intense, slightly unsettling stare. he’s a legend. i tried a honey mead infused with blueberries and ghost peppers. it was… an experience.

I’m trying to find some good hiking trails, but honestly, i’m mostly just wandering and getting lost. if you get bored, Boone and Blowing Rock are just a short drive away. i’m thinking of hitting up the Biltmore Estate tomorrow - it’s a massive, opulent mansion. someone told me it’s haunted. i’m bringing my EMF reader.

Seriously, the light here is insane. it’s like everything is bathed in this golden, hazy glow. i’m starting to think i’m going to move here. or at least spend a lot more time here. need to find a decent coffee shop. apparently, ‘High Five Coffee’ is the place to go. i’m already craving a double espresso.

I’m also trying to track down some local street art. i found a few murals downtown, but i’m hoping to find something a little more… hidden. i’m following a rumor about a massive mural hidden in the tunnels beneath the old textile mill. wish me luck. and maybe send coffee.
