Dust & Echoes in Valparaíso: A Slightly Broken Trip

@Topiclo Admin3/25/2026blog

okay, so, i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm coffee. 3351879 and 1024686026… honestly, those numbers just kinda swam around in my head for a while. felt like a weird password to a forgotten dream. the air here in Valparaíso is thick, like wet wool and something vaguely floral, you know? it’s 15.75 degrees, feels like 15.97, temp min 15.75, temp max 15.75, pressure 1014, humidity 99, sea level 1014, grnd level 864. yeah, that’s… a lot of numbers. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.

seriously, this place is insane. like, gloriously, wonderfully, aggressively insane. it’s a riot of color, a tangle of staircases that seem to defy gravity, and enough street art to make your eyeballs weep. i spent the first hour just wandering, completely lost, and honestly, it was the best thing ever. i found this tiny little cafe - ‘El Descanso’ - tucked away on a ridiculously steep street. the owner, a guy named Ricardo, kept yelling at me in Spanish, but in the most charming way possible. he insisted i try the empanadas de mariscos. they were… intense.

I’m trying to document everything, but my camera’s battery died about an hour in. which is a tragedy, because the light here is everything. it’s this hazy, golden light that seems to cling to the buildings and make everything look like a faded photograph. i’m relying heavily on my phone, which is already threatening to stage a revolt.

Someone told me that the best views are from the Mirador Alegre, but the climb is brutal. i almost gave up halfway up, convinced my calves were going to stage a full-blown mutiny. but i pushed through, and the view was… worth it. you could see the entire city spread out below you, a chaotic patchwork of houses, churches, and winding streets.

I overheard gossip at a bar last night - ‘La Taberna’ - about a hidden courtyard filled with sculptures. apparently, it’s only accessible through a tiny, unmarked doorway. i’m on the hunt for it tomorrow. i’m hoping it’s not just another tourist trap.

Someone at La Taberna said, ‘Don’t trust the pastelitos. They’re secretly filled with sadness.’ Seriously, sadness.

Speaking of locals, if you get bored, Santiago is just a short drive away. I heard that the seafood is incredible there, but the traffic is a nightmare. i’m trying to avoid Santiago at all costs. there’s this old woman who lives across the street from my hostel - she’s always sitting on her porch, knitting and watching the world go by. she doesn’t speak much English, but she gives me this knowing look sometimes, like she knows exactly what i’m up to. she’s a bit of a character, that’s for sure.

I’m seriously considering buying a beret. it just feels… right. i need something to protect me from the rain, which, let’s be honest, is a constant threat here. it’s like a perpetual drizzle, a gentle, insistent reminder that you’re in a coastal city.

I found this amazing little shop selling vintage postcards. i bought a stack - mostly blurry photos of the city from the early 20th century. they’re beautiful, in a melancholic way. i’m thinking of framing them. or maybe just sticking them on my wall. or maybe burning them. i haven’t decided yet.

Here’s a quick gear list, because i’m apparently obsessed with lists:
Hiking boots (essential)
Rain jacket (obviously)
Camera (currently on its last legs)
Beret (still debating)
Notebook and pen (for capturing all the chaos)
A healthy dose of cynicism

I’m heading to the beach now - Playa Cerro Alegre. i heard that the sunsets are spectacular. i’m not holding my breath, but i’m willing to try.

Seriously, this place is a mess. a beautiful, chaotic, utterly captivating mess. i’m not sure i’m going to like it, but i’m already hopelessly addicted.

Pro tip: don’t wear white. you will regret it.

Okay, I’m going to go find some more coffee. and maybe a beret.
