Delhi's Dust and Dreams: A Drummer's Detour

@Topiclo Admin3/28/2026blog

okay, so i didn't plan to be in Delhi. Touring with The Static Bloom is… unpredictable, let’s just say. We were supposed to be in Bangkok, but a rogue monsoon and a very stressed-out tour manager landed me here. And honestly? It’s been… something.

I’m a touring session drummer, you see. My life is usually a blur of airport terminals, dodgy hotel rooms, and the relentless thump of a kick drum. Delhi threw a whole different kind of chaos at me. The heat… oh, the heat. I just checked and it's hovering around thirty-two degrees Celsius, feels like closer to twenty-nine. There right now, hope you like that kind of thing. It’s like being wrapped in a warm, slightly dusty blanket. A blanket that occasionally spits exhaust fumes.

Delhi street scene

I’ve been crashing at this tiny guesthouse in *Paharganj. It’s… an experience. The walls are thin, the plumbing is questionable, and the guy who runs it, Mr. Sharma, keeps trying to set me up with his niece. Bless his heart. If you get bored, Agra and Jaipur are just a short drive away, though I’m not sure my sanity can handle another adventure right now.

I spent most of my time wandering around, trying to soak it all in. The sheer
noise is incredible. Horns, vendors shouting, the constant hum of a million conversations. It’s overwhelming, but also… exhilarating. I found this amazing little chai stall near the Red Fort - seriously, find it. It’s called “Raj’s Chai” and he makes the best masala chai I’ve ever had. I’m pretty sure he puts a secret ingredient in it.

“Don’t trust the auto drivers near Connaught Place. They’ll quote you triple the price, guaranteed. Walk a few blocks, you’ll find someone more reasonable.”

Someone told me that the
India Gate is beautiful at night, all lit up. I haven’t made it there yet, but it’s on the list. I also heard that the street food around Chandni Chowk is incredible, but also… potentially dangerous. Apparently, you need to be very selective about where you eat. I’m sticking to chai and the occasional samosa for now.

Delhi market

My gear situation is… minimal. I brought my trusty snare drum and a few sticks, hoping to find some jam sessions. No luck so far, but I did manage to barter for a decent sitar at a flea market. It’s not exactly a drum, but it’s something to mess around with. I’m thinking of incorporating some Indian rhythms into my playing. Maybe The Static Bloom will let me.

Pro-Tip: Learn a few basic Hindi phrases. It goes a long way. “Namaste” and “Shukriya” (thank you) are good starting points. Also, carry hand sanitizer. Everywhere. Seriously.

Gear List (Minimalist Drummer Edition):

Snare Drum (obviously)
Drumsticks (Vic Firth 5A - can’t live without ‘em)
Earplugs (essential for surviving the Delhi noise)
Sitar (impulse buy, don’t judge)
Hand Sanitizer (see above)
Phrasebook (Lonely Planet Hindi & Urdu Phrasebook)

Delhi street food

I’m trying to find some local music venues. Yelp says there’s a decent jazz club in
Hauz Khas Village*, but the reviews are mixed. Apparently, the drinks are overpriced and the music isn’t always great. I’ll check it out anyway. Gotta keep exploring.

“The monkeys in Old Delhi are fearless. Don’t make eye contact and hold onto your belongings.”

I’m not sure how much longer I’ll be stuck here, but I’m trying to make the most of it. Delhi is chaotic, overwhelming, and occasionally frustrating, but it’s also… captivating. It’s a city that gets under your skin. And I think, maybe, I’m starting to understand why.
