Delhi Heatstroke & Unexpected Chai: A Dispatch From Chaos

@Topiclo Admin3/24/2026blog

okay, so delhi. it’s…a lot. i didn’t really plan on delhi, honestly. it was supposed to be goa, but a miscommunication with the booking agent (don’t even ask, it involved a very enthusiastic parrot and a fax machine) landed me here. and honestly? i’m kinda glad.

let me preface this by saying i’m a *digital nomad, which basically means i work from wifi and panic frequently. i’m currently fueled by questionable street food and the sheer adrenaline of navigating traffic that seems to operate on a different plane of existence. the air is…thick. i just checked and it’s like breathing warm soup right now, hope you’re into that. the weather report said thirty-one point one degrees, but that feels like a polite lie. feels more like someone turned the city into a pizza oven.

my accommodation is…an experience. it’s a guesthouse run by a family who are incredibly sweet and constantly offering me things i can’t identify. i think one of them tried to gift me a live chicken yesterday. i politely declined. the walls are paper thin, so i’ve become intimately familiar with the neighbor’s soap operas and their very dramatic arguments about cricket. if you get restless,
agra and jaipur are just a quick train ride away, apparently.

so, the food. oh, the food. i’ve eaten things i can’t pronounce and things i’m actively trying to forget. but mostly, it’s been amazing. i found this tiny stall near chandni chowk that makes the most incredible chole bhature. seriously, it’s life-changing. i’ve been back three times. i’m pretty sure i’m 80% chickpeas at this point. you can find some reviews on Yelp.

“apparently, that guy with the monkey? total scam. he’ll demand money for a photo, then the monkey will steal your sunglasses.”

i overheard that gem from a couple of backpackers at a cafe. apparently, delhi has its share of…characters. i also heard, from a very insistent rickshaw driver, that the best place to buy spices is “my cousin’s shop, very good price, very good spices!” i’m taking that with a grain of salt (or maybe a pinch of turmeric).

my biggest challenge so far? the constant negotiation. everything is a negotiation. the price of a rickshaw, the price of a bottle of water, the price of breathing the air (okay, maybe not that last one). it’s exhausting, but also…kind of exhilarating? i’m learning to embrace the chaos. i’ve been checking out TripAdvisor for some hidden gems, and i stumbled upon a walking tour of old delhi that looks promising.

“don’t drink the tap water. seriously. just…don’t.”

that’s advice i’m definitely taking. i’ve been sticking to bottled water and copious amounts of chai. speaking of chai, i found this little tea stall run by an old man who makes the most amazing masala chai. he doesn’t speak a word of english, and i don’t speak a word of hindi, but we communicate through smiles and gestures. it’s a beautiful thing. you can find more info about local tours on Delhi Tourism.

“the red fort is amazing, but go early. like,
really* early. otherwise, you’ll be stuck in a sea of people.”

that’s what someone told me at the hostel. i’m planning to check it out tomorrow, armed with sunscreen, a hat, and a healthy dose of patience. i also found this interesting forum about Delhi on IndiaMike.

overall, delhi is overwhelming, chaotic, and utterly captivating. it’s not a place for the faint of heart, but if you’re willing to embrace the madness, it’s an experience you won’t soon forget. now, if you’ll excuse me, i need to go find another plate of chole bhature.
