Damp Dreams in Semarang: Humidity & Half-Forgotten Stories
okay, so i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm coffee. the time stamp is 1627610, and the weather… well, let’s just say it’s clinging to everything. feels like 26.72, temp’s hovering around 25.79, and the pressure’s a solid 1007. humidity? 88. it’s like stepping into a warm, slightly judgmental blanket. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.
semarang. seriously? i stumbled upon this place while trying to avoid the usual tourist traps and honestly, it’s… weirdly captivating. it’s not postcard pretty, not in the way you’d expect. it’s got this gritty, almost melancholic feel, like a faded photograph. the architecture is a mishmash of Dutch colonial, Javanese temples, and something vaguely Chinese - a real visual jumble. i spent the last three days wandering around, mostly getting lost and eating way too much gado-gado.
first off, the food. oh god, the food. forget everything you think you know about Indonesian cuisine. this is a whole different beast. the gado-gado was incredible, obviously, but i also found this tiny warung (that’s a small restaurant, for you uninitiated folks) that served the most amazing soto ayam - chicken soup with a ridiculously complex spice blend. someone told me that the warung down by the river, ‘Warung Mbok Boto,’ is the best, but it’s always packed. i heard that the owner, Mbok Boto herself, uses a secret family recipe passed down for generations. i’m not saying it’s true, but i’m also not not saying it’s true.
and the people… they’re… intense. not in a bad way, just… present. everyone seems to be talking at once, bargaining in the markets, or just staring off into the distance with a thoughtful expression. i tried to strike up a conversation with an old man selling batik (those beautiful, hand-painted fabrics) and he just grunted and pointed at a particularly intricate design. i got the impression he’d seen it all before. if you get bored, [Surakarta] is just a short drive away, apparently - a sprawling city full of artisans and temples. i didn’t make it there, honestly, i was too busy trying to avoid getting completely lost.
my gear list? let’s see… my battered Nikon, a sketchbook filled with half-finished drawings, a ridiculously oversized backpack, and a constant supply of ibuprofen. i also brought a portable charger, because, you know, technology. and a phrasebook. mostly because i’m terrible at speaking languages. i’m pretty sure i accidentally ordered a plate of fried grasshoppers the other day.
there’s this one place, a crumbling Dutch colonial building near the harbor, that’s apparently haunted. i didn’t go, obviously. i’m not a ghost hunter, but i did hear some pretty unsettling rumors. someone whispered that a former governor died there under mysterious circumstances and his ghost still wanders the halls, searching for his lost love. i’m not saying it’s true, but i’m also not ruling it out. it’s Semarang, after all. it’s got that vibe.
seriously, TripAdvisor says the ‘Hotel Ambassador Semarang’ is decent, but Yelp is mostly just pictures of gado-gado. i found a local forum where people are discussing the best places to buy batik - it’s a chaotic mess of opinions and emojis. i’m trying to decipher it all, but it’s… challenging.
and the humidity! it’s like trying to breathe through a wet towel. i’m pretty sure my clothes are permanently damp. i’m considering investing in a dehumidifier, but i’m not sure where i’d plug it in.
overall? semarang isn’t for everyone. it’s not polished or predictable. it’s messy, chaotic, and a little bit unsettling. but it’s also… real. and sometimes, that’s exactly what you need.
