Chasing Light in Davao City
i woke up with the sun already spilling through the thin curtain of my hostel room the kind of light that makes every dust mote look like a tiny star i grabbed my battered canon slipped on my worn out sandals and headed out to chase the morning glow over the city streets the air felt thick like a warm blanket wrapped around the streets and i could already taste the hint of salt from the nearby bay
i wandered toward the bustling *sari-sari store corner where the owner was arranging packets of biscuits and bright sachets of shampoo he greeted me with a nod and a smile that seemed to say you're hunting for something real i lifted my camera and caught the way the light hit the metal roof turning it into a sheet of molten gold a few blocks away the jeepney terminal throbbed with life drivers shouted destinations passengers haggled over fares and the whole scene pulsed like a heartbeat
someone told me that the best view of Mount Apo's hides behind the old railway bridge but i heard that you need to wake up before the roosters to catch the mist still clinging to the peaks i found a narrow path lined with banana leaves and followed it until the city noise faded into a distant hum there perched on a rusted rail i framed the volcano's silhouette against a sky that was slowly turning from deep indigo to a soft peach the shot felt like a secret whisper between me and the mountain
later i ducked into the downtown market a maze of stalls where vendors piled up mangoes pomelos and bundles of fresh cilantro the scent of grilled barbecue skewers mingled with the sweet aroma of ripe papaya i whispered to a lady selling woven baskets asking where she gets her dyes and she laughed pointing to a stall across the lane where buckets of indigo and turmeric sat like little pots of magic i snapped a quick photo of her hands the lines telling stories of years spent twisting reeds into art
as the afternoon waned the humidity clung to my skin like a second layer and i found refuge in a small café tucked behind a faded mural of a tarsier the barista slipped me a cold glass of sago't gulaman sweating from the chill and we exchanged stories about the best hidden waterfalls in the region someone mentioned that if you follow the creek behind the old church you'll discover a curtain of water that locals call the veil but i heard that the path gets slick after rain so bring good grip on your shoes
i also spent a few minutes chatting with a street musician playing a battered ukulele near the plaza his melodies tangled with the distant honk of tricycles and the laughter of kids chasing pigeons he told me his favorite spot to play is under the old acacia tree where the shade feels like a cool hug after a hot day i captured a few frames of his fingers dancing over the strings the light catching the sweat on his brow
evening arrived with a slow golden sigh i made my way to the waterfront promenade where families spread out mats children chased each other near the water’s edge and old men played sungka* under strings of lanterns the sky painted itself in shades of amber and violet and the city lights began to flicker on like fireflies waking up i lifted my camera one last time capturing the reflection of the pier on the calm water the way the light danced on each ripple
if you ever get tired of the city buzz the nearby towns of Kidapawan and Koronadal are just a short hop away on a rattling jeepney each offering its own flavor of weekend markets and mountain trails
