Charleston Chaos: A Whirlwind of History, Humidity, & Hot Shrimp

okay, so charleston. where do i even begin? i’m pretty sure i walked in sideways on the first day. the zip code 6254843 keeps popping into my head, like some weird, digital echo. then 1524574121 - no idea what that is, but it felt… significant. maybe it’s a secret code to unlock the best she-crab soup? who knows.

and the weather? it’s… a lot. temp: 23.12°C, feels like 22.3°C. totally humid, like someone’s perpetually breathing on you. it’s that kind of heat that just sinks into your bones. i just checked and it's…heavy, there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. bring a hat. seriously. and maybe a portable fan. i’m perpetually damp.

this whole trip was supposed to be about meticulously planned historical tours, but, like, that went completely out the window. i’m a vintage clothes picker by trade and i stumbled upon this amazing little shop on king street - seriously, it was overflowing with 70s floral prints. i think i might have bought a jumpsuit i’ll regret (or love?) immediately.

but honestly? the best parts were the unplanned moments. like, getting completely lost in the french quarter and ending up at this tiny jazz club where a dude was playing the saxophone like his life depended on it. or the spontaneous seafood boil i joined - i'm pretty sure i ate my weight in shrimp. i heard that the best places for a seafood boil are often the ones tucked away on side streets. check out this list of restaurants on Yelp: https://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=seafood+boil&find_loc=Charleston%2C+SC.

the neighbors are… well, full of character. the houses are all pastel colors and wrought iron balconies, looking like they’re straight out of a movie. if you get bored, Savannah is just a short drive away. everyone seems to be friendly, and there’s always music spilling out of open doorways. someone told me that the ghost tours are legitimately terrifying but worth it. i’m leaning towards that. i’ve always been fascinated by spooky stories and haunted locations. TripAdvisor has a good rundown of those.

seriously, the amount of history here is overwhelming. i spent an hour just wandering around cobblestone streets, imagining what life was like centuries ago. someone overheard me muttering about the antebellum period and just laughed - said i sounded like a history professor. who am i to argue? i’m pretty sure the city’s history is woven into the very fabric of the place. i’m not even gonna lie, i spent a good chunk of time just people-watching. you can find a good historical overview here: https://www.charlestoncvb.com/things-to-do/history/.

and the noise! it’s a constant hum. the clip-clop of horse-drawn carriages, the chatter from the restaurants, the occasional burst of music. it’s not bad noise, just… a lot. i'm trying to embrace the chaos, though. i'm pretty sure that’s what makes charleston, charleston. i’m thinking of checking out a sunset cruise - heard the drinks are good. i’m a coffee snob, so i need caffeine. they have some amazing cafes here - you can find a few on this site: https://www.charlestoncoffee.com/.

this whole trip feels… unfinished. like i’ve only scratched the surface of what charleston has to offer. i’m already planning my return. maybe i'll learn to play the banjo. maybe. i’m currently trying to decide whether to get a tattoo of a shrimp. opinions welcome.
