Bristol: Rain, Rumors, and Really Weird Vibes

okay, so i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm coffee. i landed in bristol yesterday, and honestly, it’s… a thing. the air smells like wet concrete and something vaguely floral, which is a confusing combo, ya know? the temp’s hovering around 2 degrees, feels like -2.56, temp min 1.72, temp max 3.3, pressure 1013, humidity 85, sea level 1013, ground level 998. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.

seriously, the rain is relentless. it’s this grey, persistent drizzle that just… sits. like a damp blanket. i’m picturing a lot of pubs and dark corners, which is honestly my aesthetic. i stumbled into this place called ‘The Plough’, and the bartender, a guy named Silas with a tattoo of a badger on his forearm, told me someone told him the best pasty in bristol is at ‘The Crusty Loaf’ - which, let’s be real, is probably a lie. but i’m going to check it out anyway.

my gear list is a disaster, obviously. i’ve got my battered 50mm lens, a half-empty bottle of hand sanitizer, and a questionable collection of socks. i also brought my sketchbook, because, you know, documenting the existential dread is important.

found a cool little street art scene down by the harbor. tons of murals, mostly abstract stuff. it’s a bit bleak, but in a strangely beautiful way. i almost tripped over a guy playing a didgeridoo - seriously, a didgeridoo.

Someone overheard me complaining about the weather and said, "Just embrace the gloom, love. It’s good for the moss."

okay, so i’m trying to find somewhere to eat that isn’t just chips and gravy. i need something…different. i checked out Yelp and TripAdvisor, and ‘St. Nicholas Market’ seems promising. apparently, it’s a chaotic explosion of food stalls. i’m cautiously optimistic.

if you get bored, Cardiff is just a short drive away. it’s got that whole ‘castle town’ vibe, which is… fine, i guess. i’m not huge on castles.

heard that the Clifton Suspension Bridge is a must-see, but honestly, i’m more interested in finding a decent cup of coffee. i’m on the hunt for a place with proper beans and a skilled barista. i’m talking single-origin, pour-over, the whole shebang. i found a place called ‘Origin Coffee’ - it’s tucked away on a side street, and it smells amazing.

“Don’t trust anyone who says Bristol is ‘cool,’” a local warned me. “It’s just… stubbornly itself.”

seriously, the people here are… interesting. a mix of artists, students, and people who look like they’ve seen some things. there’s a definite air of melancholy, but also a surprising amount of energy. i saw a guy juggling flaming torches while playing a ukulele - that’s bristol for you.

i’m thinking of checking out the M Shed museum later. it’s supposed to be about the history of the city, but i’m mostly hoping to find some interesting artifacts to sketch.

just downloaded a podcast about Victorian-era ghost stories. perfect for a rainy evening.

“The old warehouses down by the docks are said to be haunted by the spirits of sailors who died at sea,” a drunk local confided. “They say you can still hear their voices on the wind.”

okay, i’m officially starving. time to tackle that market. and maybe find another badger tattoo.

seriously, the rain. it’s relentless. i need a strong drink.
