Bristol: Rain, Rumors, and Really Weird Vibes
okay, so i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm coffee. 2522098… seriously, what even is that number? and 1724702362? it just… sticks with you, ya know? like a particularly persistent mosquito. i landed in Bristol yesterday, and honestly, it’s… something. the air smells like wet concrete and something vaguely floral, which is a confusing combo.
I checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. 1011 pressure, 79 humidity - feels like stepping into a slightly damp sponge. It’s not awful, just… persistent. The rain’s been a constant companion, a grey, drizzly soundtrack to everything. I’m staying in this tiny place near the Harbourside - it’s basically a converted shipping container, which is cool, but the plumbing is… enthusiastic.
I spent the afternoon wandering around Stokes Croft, which is a total mishmash of street art, independent shops, and cafes that look like they were designed by a particularly enthusiastic badger. Found a place called ‘The Spoke’ - they do amazing coffee. Seriously, the best i’ve had in ages. It’s a bit of a dive, but the barista, Liam, is a legend. He told me someone told him that the best place to find vintage denim is down by the docks - I’m skeptical, but i’m checking it out tomorrow. You can find some cool vintage finds at https://www.vintagestyle.co.uk/.
Speaking of locals, if you get bored, Cardiff is just a short drive away. I overheard a group of students at a pub last night - they were arguing about whether Banksy actually lives in Bristol or just visits. Someone told me that the Clifton Suspension Bridge is haunted by the ghost of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who apparently hated pigeons. I’m not entirely convinced, but it’s a good story. I heard that the best place to grab a pie is at a little place called ‘The Pie Hole’ - apparently, they’re legendary. Definitely worth a look. https://www.thepiehole.co.uk/
“Don’t trust anyone who says Bristol is ‘cool.’ It’s just… complicated,” a guy in a leather jacket told me at the bus station. He looked like he’d wrestled a badger and lost.
I’m trying to capture the vibe here, you know? It’s not postcard pretty. It’s gritty, it’s a little bit chaotic, and it’s definitely got a pulse. I’m heading to the Arnolfini tomorrow - it’s an arts center with some interesting exhibitions. https://www.arnolfini.org/
“Just… go to the Wapping Wharf,” a woman with bright pink hair advised me, taking a massive gulp of her cider. “It’s where all the weirdos hang out. And the food is decent.”
I’m seriously considering getting a tattoo here. Or maybe just a really elaborate eyebrow piercing. I’m not sure yet. Right now, i’m just trying to find a decent place to charge my camera. The battery’s dying faster than my enthusiasm.
Seriously, the rain. It’s relentless. But there’s something about it, i guess. It makes everything feel… real. And the people here are… interesting. Definitely not boring. I’m off to find some more coffee and maybe try to decipher the meaning of that number again. 1724702362. It’s haunting me.
Oh, and I found a vintage shop near St. Nicholas Market - it’s a goldmine! https://www.yelp.com/search?keyword=vintage+shop&location=Bristol%2C+England
