Bristol: Rain, Rumors, and Really Weird Street Art
okay, so i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm coffee. i landed in bristol yesterday, and honestly, it’s… a thing. the air smells like damp concrete and something vaguely floral, which is a confusing combo, ya know? the pressure was 1010, humidity 73, and it felt like 13.84 - i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. the temp was fluctuating between 13.84 and 14.4, which is basically a permanent state of slightly shivering.
I’m staying in this tiny place near the Harbourside - it’s basically a converted warehouse, which is cool, but the plumbing sounds like a badger wrestling a washing machine. I found it through Airbnb, obviously. Seriously, check out Airbnb if you’re looking for something a little… different. I’m trying to capture the whole vibe, you know? It’s like, gritty but with a surprising amount of pastel.
Spent the afternoon wandering around Stokes Croft, which is basically bristol’s street art mecca. It’s insane. Like, seriously, you could spend a week just staring at murals. I stumbled across this guy, Leo, who’s been doing some incredible stuff - huge, layered pieces with this really unsettling, almost dreamlike quality. Someone told me that he used to be a tax accountant before he decided to trade spreadsheets for spray cans. Wild, right? I also heard that he’s obsessed with pigeons. Don’t ask.
I grabbed a pint at a pub called The Plough - it’s a proper old-school boozer. The bartender, a guy named Barry, was giving me the side-eye the whole time, but he poured a decent ale. He said, and I quote, "Don’t go near Clifton Suspension Bridge after dark, love. It’s got a bad history." Creepy. Seriously, check out Visit Bristol for all the official tourist info, but honestly, the best stuff is found off the beaten path.
I’m trying to get a feel for the city, you know? It’s got this weird, layered history - Roman ruins, medieval streets, industrial past… it’s like a time capsule. I spent an hour just staring at the ruins under the Cathedral, trying to imagine what it was like back then. It’s humbling, in a slightly depressing way. I also checked out the M Shed museum - it’s a great overview of the city’s story. M Shed Website.
Speaking of depressing, I found a review online that said the curry houses are all aggressively mediocre. Someone told me that the best Indian food is actually in Cardiff, which is a bit of a trek. I’m not entirely convinced, but I’m willing to investigate. I’m also looking for a decent coffee shop. Bristol seems to have a serious coffee snob problem. I need a triple espresso, stat. I found a place called Foundation Coffee - they roast their own beans. Worth a shot. Foundation Coffee.
I’m trying to capture the energy of the place, the way it feels. It’s like… a low hum of creativity and a little bit of melancholy. If you get bored, Cardiff is just a short drive away. I’m thinking of heading over there tomorrow to check out the castle.
Seriously, the rain is relentless. It’s this constant, drizzly grey that just seeps into your bones. I just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. I’m starting to think I need a raincoat and a very large thermos of tea. Maybe I’ll check out some vintage shops tomorrow - I’m always on the hunt for a good deal. Bristol Vintage. And maybe, just maybe, I’ll find a decent cup of coffee. Wish me luck.
