Bristol: Rain, Rumors, and Really Weird Street Art
okay, so i’m pretty sure i’m running on caffeine and regret. i just landed back from Bristol, and honestly, my brain feels like a scrambled egg. the humidity was clinging to everything - like, 96% clinging. the pressure was 1021, which felt… intense. and the temperature? 6.8 to 8.14. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. it was drizzly, constantly, you know? like a persistent, slightly judgmental ghost.
I was mostly there for the street art, which is… a thing. a big thing. it’s not just pretty pictures; it’s like, a full-blown, chaotic conversation happening on every wall. i spent three days just wandering, trying to decipher the messages. it’s overwhelming, in the best way. i found this amazing little spot near the *Harbourside - seriously, the water looks like melted silver in the rain.
I stayed in a place called ‘The Pig & Fiddler’ - it’s a bit touristy, but the beer garden is actually pretty decent. i overheard a guy at the bar telling someone that… someone told me that… the best pasty in Bristol is at a place called ‘The Pie Factory’. don’t quote me on that, but it sounded promising. i’m always down for a good pasty.
Speaking of locals, if you get bored, Cardiff is just a short drive away. there’s this family, the Millers, who live across the street from my hotel. they’re… intense. Mr. Miller is obsessed with collecting vintage teapots, and Mrs. Miller spends her days knitting tiny sweaters for pigeons. it’s bizarre, but they’re genuinely lovely. they gave me a slightly unsettling, but ultimately helpful, map of the city.
Here’s the gear list, because i always need a gear list:
Camera (obviously) - a battered Sony Alpha 7III. it’s seen better days, but it still spits out decent shots.
Rain jacket - a waterproof, breathable thing. seriously, you need one.
Notebook and pen - for capturing all the weirdness.
Portable charger - because my phone dies faster than a houseplant in direct sunlight.
A ridiculously large coffee - essential for survival.
I stumbled across this incredible mural near St. Nicholas Market - it was a giant, weeping *fox surrounded by neon mushrooms. it was… a lot. i tried to get a good shot, but the rain kept messing with the focus.
I also checked out the Arnott’s Mead - a surprisingly peaceful spot in the middle of the city. it’s a little park with a pond and some ancient trees. it felt like stepping into another world. i found a local board with some great recommendations for pubs - apparently, ‘The Coronation Tap’ has the best Sunday roast. i’m adding that to the list.
And then there’s the gossip. someone told me that the street art scene is actually run by a collective of retired librarians. seriously. i don’t know if that’s true, but it sounds plausible, right?
“Don’t trust the pigeons,” a woman with bright pink hair told me at a gallery opening. “They’re watching you. Always watching.”
I spent an afternoon exploring the Bristol Museum & Art Gallery - it’s got a surprisingly good collection of Roman artifacts. and i found this really cool exhibit on the history of the city’s docks. it’s fascinating to learn about how Bristol became a major trading port.
Seriously, the rain. it’s relentless. but there’s something about it that’s… comforting, I guess? it just adds to the atmosphere. it’s like the city is constantly weeping, but in a strangely beautiful way.
“Just go to Cargo Depot,” a drunk guy slurred at me outside a pub. “It’s… it’s an experience. You won’t regret it. Probably.”
I’m heading to Cardiff tomorrow, but I’ll definitely be back to Bristol. there’s just too much weirdness to ignore.
Pro-Tip:* Wear waterproof shoes. Seriously. And bring a sense of humor.
