Berlin Brain Dump: 2633583 & 1826479020 – A Weathered Story
okay, so berlin. landed yesterday, and honestly? my brain feels like a scrambled egg. i'm a freelance photographer, so the first thing i did was try to capture the…thing…of it all. the energy. it’s not the frantic kind, more like a low hum of possibility mixed with a slight undercurrent of existential dread.
The weather? i just checked and it's...a gentle, almost melancholic drizzle. a good Berlin drizzle, you know? the kind that makes everything look a little bit faded and perfectly okay. they say it feels like 11.28 degrees Celsius, but with the humidity at 51%, it’s definitely clinging to you. not unpleasant, just…present.
I'm staying in Prenzlauer Berg. the neighbors are…interesting. a mix of hip cafes, tiny apartments overflowing with plants, and old men playing chess in the park. i saw a guy yesterday feeding pigeons stale bread, and it felt completely normal. it’s like everyone’s living their own little movie.
Spent most of the afternoon wandering around, camera in hand. the architecture here is seriously something. like, you’ve got remnants of history bumping up against super modern spaces. it's a constant conversation. i walked past the Brandenburg Gate - classic, obviously - and then just got lost in the side streets. i highly recommend checking out some of the street art in Kreuzberg; it's insane. you can find some cool walking tours on TripAdvisor if you're into that sort of thing.
*Pro tip*: don't be afraid to get lost. seriously. that’s where the magic happens. you'll stumble upon hidden courtyards, cool little shops, and maybe even a secret garden.
I had a coffee at a place called The Barn. seriously good coffee. someone told me that the best coffee in Berlin isn’t always the most pretentious place, but the ones tucked away in unassuming corners. i heard that they make a killer cappuccino. And the pastries? don't even get me started.
Yesterday, i was chatting with a street artist near Hackesche Höfe, and he mentioned a hidden speakeasy somewhere in Mitte. something about needing a password and knocking three times. classic berlin. he said it's always a good idea to ask locals for recommendations; you never know what hidden gems you might uncover.
Oh, and someone warned me about pickpockets around tourist hotspots, so keep your wits about you. just a heads-up.
I’m planning on checking out some of the museums - the Pergamon Museum is supposedly incredible. And maybe a canal tour? I'm always up for a canal tour. Berlin Expedition has some options. Plus, if you get bored, these amazing cities are just a short train ride away!
Anyway, that’s my brain dump for now. gonna go wander some more. wish me luck finding that speakeasy! and maybe a decent pastry. and definitely a less drizzly day. it's a beautiful city, even when it's feeling a little…grey. i'm thinking of checking out the local boards on Craigslist Berlin; you never know what events pop up. It’s all a bit chaotic, but in a good way. hope you're having a better week than my scrambled brain is.
