Berlin Bleeds: A Caffeine-Fueled Descent into the Concrete Jungle

@Topiclo Admin3/18/2026blog

okay, so i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm espresso right now. 526480… that’s the timestamp on my phone, which is probably a lie anyway. 1643357328 - doesn’t even mean anything, does it? just a bunch of numbers staring back at me. i landed in berlin yesterday, and honestly, it’s… a lot. like, aggressively a lot. the air smells like rain and something vaguely metallic, which i’m starting to think is just the sheer volume of history pressing down on you.

I checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. It’s perpetually grey, a bruised purple-grey, and the humidity is clinging to everything like a damp blanket. 1021 pressure, 100 humidity - feels like you’re wading through soup. 973 sea level, which, you know, is just depressing. i’m staying in Kreuzberg, which is… chaotic. beautiful chaos, but chaos nonetheless. it’s a tangle of graffiti, tiny bars overflowing with people, and the constant thrum of music.

I stumbled into a place called ‘Café Einstein’ - it’s basically a shrine to coffee. They take it seriously. Like, bordering on religious. I ordered a double espresso, black, no sugar, and the guy just stared at me like i’d asked him to perform open-heart surgery. it was intense. i needed it.

Someone told me that the best currywurst in the city is at Curry 36 - don’t tell anyone I said that. it’s a local secret. I heard that the East Side Gallery is worth a visit, but it’s mostly just a long, exposed wall covered in paintings. it’s cool, i guess, if you’re into that sort of thing. i spent most of the afternoon wandering around, getting hopelessly lost and taking pictures of random buildings. i’m pretty sure i accidentally walked into a protest.

I’m trying to capture the feeling, you know? The gritty, the weird, the slightly unsettling. Berlin feels like a city that’s simultaneously trying to forget its past and constantly reminding itself of it. It’s a city of ghosts and rebels and people who are perpetually on the edge of something.

I found a little record store near my hostel - ‘Record Store Berlin’ - it’s a total dive, but they have a surprisingly good selection of obscure vinyl. I picked up a copy of some Bauhaus album. it’s probably worth like, five bucks, but it feels like a treasure.

If you get bored, Potsdam is just a short drive away. It’s got this ridiculously opulent palace that looks like it was built by a slightly unhinged emperor. Seriously, the gardens are insane. I overheard some drunk advice at a bar last night - apparently, the best way to experience Berlin is to just wander around and get lost. Don’t plan anything, don’t try to see everything, just… be. It’s a bit of a cliché, but it’s actually pretty solid.

I’m thinking of checking out the Mauerpark flea market tomorrow. I heard it’s a total madhouse, but also a great place to find vintage clothes and weird souvenirs. I’m on the hunt for some 80s denim. I also need to find a decent döner kebab. Yelp says ‘Mustafa’s Gemüse Kebap’ is the place to go, but honestly, I’m skeptical. https://www.yelp.com/biz/mustafa-gemuese-kebap-berlin

Seriously, this city is exhausting. But in a good way. Like, a creatively exhausting way. I’m going to go find another coffee and try to make sense of it all. Maybe.

And if you're looking for more local haunts, check out this Berlin subreddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/berlin/

Okay, that’s it for now. Need sleep. Or more caffeine. Probably both.
