Bangkok's Neon Nights and Sticky Air: A Drummer's Chaos

it's 2am and i'm still wired from the show. bangkok's got this weird way of making you forget time exists. the humidity's like a wet blanket, but the streets are alive with something electric. i just checked and it's 29°C there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.

woke up in a tiny room above a 7-eleven, the kind of place where the aircon sounds like a dying robot. grabbed a thai iced coffee from the place downstairs-they call it 'gafae yen' here, and it's basically rocket fuel with condensed milk. someone told me that the best pad thai in town is from a cart near wat pho, but i haven't verified that yet. it's just one of those drunk advice things you hear from other travelers.

the gig last night was at a spot called 'the saxophone pub.' yeah, i know, sounds like a tourist trap, but the drummer before me swore it was legit. the crowd was a mix of expats, backpackers, and locals who knew every word to 'knockin' on heaven's door.' i felt like an imposter until the bass player handed me a shot of something clear and dangerous.

tried to find a quiet spot after the show but bangkok doesn't really do 'quiet.' ended up on a rooftop bar that looked like it was built from spare scaffolding. the view was unreal-city lights stretching forever, the kind of thing that makes you forget your back hurts from hauling cymbals. if you get bored, chiang mai and koh samui are just a short drive away, though 'short drive' here might mean a 12-hour bus ride.

overheard a guy at the bar saying the real bangkok is in the alleys, not the temples. said something about a place called 'soi cowboy' but i'm not sure if that was a joke or a warning. anyway, the street art here is insane-giant murals popping up overnight, like the city's got a secret graffiti crew.

next stop: some floating market i heard about from a girl with a ukulele. she said it's 'authentic' but also 'touristy as hell,' so i guess that's bangkok in a nutshell. anyway, if you're here, bring earplugs and a sense of humor. and maybe some antacids.
