Atlanta, Georgia: Humidity, Hummers, and a Whole Lotta History (Apparently)
okay, so. atlanta. i’m a botanist, right? i spend my days elbow-deep in soil, cataloging ferns and arguing with grad students about the proper way to propagate a rare orchid. i did not expect to find myself here, dodging rogue scooters and trying to decipher the city’s vibe. it all started with a conference… long story. let’s just say a misread email and a desperate need for a change of scenery landed me in Georgia.
i just checked and it’s… a damp hug out there right now. like, the air is actively trying to cling to you. the temperature’s hovering around 15.02 degrees, but it feels like 13.96. pressure’s at 995, humidity’s a solid 53%. i’m pretty sure my hair has achieved sentience.
and the neighbors? well, if you’re craving a dose of southern charm (or just a change of pace), savannah is only a couple of hours away. i spent a day wandering around, trying to find a decent cup of coffee (more on that later).
let’s talk about the history. i mean, i’m a botanist, not a historian, but even i could feel the weight of it all. the *Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park was… intense. really powerful. i spent hours just wandering around, trying to absorb it all. you can find more info here: https://www.nps.gov/malu/index.htm.
food. okay, food is important. i’m a scientist, i need fuel. i stumbled upon this tiny little soul food place - Paschal’s Restaurant - and it was everything. someone told me that it was a meeting place for civil rights leaders back in the day. the fried chicken? life-changing. seriously. check out their Yelp page: https://www.yelp.com/biz/paschals-restaurant-atlanta.
coffee. oh, the coffee. this is where i get serious. i’m a coffee snob, okay? i need my single-origin, ethically-sourced, perfectly-extracted brew. atlanta… it’s a work in progress. i heard that Aurora Coffee is supposed to be decent, but i haven’t made it there yet. i’m still recovering from the lukewarm, vaguely-chocolate-flavored stuff i had this morning. i’m looking for something like this: https://www.stumptowncoffee.com/.
and the people! i’ve met some genuinely lovely folks. a woman at the park told me about a hidden botanical garden - Atlanta Botanical Garden - that i absolutely have* to visit. apparently, it’s got a massive orchid collection. score! you can find more details here: https://www.atlantabotanicalgarden.org/.
“Don’t go to Little Five Points after midnight,” a very drunk guy told me at a bar. “Unless you like… interesting characters.”
“The traffic is a nightmare,” a local warned me, while simultaneously dodging a pigeon. “Just… accept it. It’s part of the experience.”
“Apparently, there’s a ghost tour that goes through Oakland Cemetery,” someone overheard whispering at a coffee shop. “It’s supposed to be really creepy.”
okay, so, final verdict? atlanta is… complicated. it’s humid, it’s historical, it’s got a weird energy. but it’s also got amazing food, friendly people, and a surprising amount of green space. i’m not sure i’ll be trading my lab coat for a pair of cowboy boots anytime soon, but i’m glad i came. i’m also glad i packed enough deodorant. you can read more reviews on TripAdvisor: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Tourism-g60897-Atlanta_Georgia-Vacations.html.
pro-tip: invest in a good umbrella. and maybe a hazmat suit.
