Athens: Chasing Ruins, Coffee, and Weird Vibes
okay so i landed in athens and the first thing i noticed? the air smells like ancient stone and fresh bread. not even kidding. my brain was still half asleep from the red-eye flight, but the acropolis was already glowing in the morning light like it was posing for instagram.
i checked the weather and it’s 12.7°c right now with that weird “feels like” thing at 11.67°c. basically, bring a light jacket and prepare for the sun to randomly roast you. humidity is 63%, so not terrible, but my hair definitely had opinions about it.
anyway, i started my day at a tiny café in koukaki. the barista looked at me like i was insane when i asked for oat milk, but whatever, the freddo espresso hit different. someone at the next table was ranting about how the best souvlaki is at this hole-in-the-wall called bairamis. i took that as gospel and went straight there. yeah, it was that good. messy, juicy, and the pita was still warm.
random tip: if you’re into street art, exarchia is where it’s at. i heard from a dreadlocked dude outside a record store that the murals there change faster than athens traffic. also, he said to avoid the area at night unless you’re into sketchy vibes. take that as you will.
walking around the plaka felt like stepping into a postcard, but with way more stray cats. they own the place, no joke. i sat by the tower of the winds for a bit, just people-watching. overheard a couple arguing about whether the ancient greeks had better fashion sense than modern athenians. honestly, debatable.
if you get bored, [thessaloniki] and [nafplio] are just a short drive away. totally worth it if you’ve got extra time.
weather check: still 12.7°c, but the sun’s out now so it feels warmer. classic athens mood swings.
anyway, my feet are killing me and i’m sitting at a rooftop bar in monastiraki with a glass of ouzo. the acropolis is lit up behind me and i’m trying not to cry about how pretty it all is. someone just told me the best time to visit the acropolis museum is right before closing when it’s nearly empty. gonna try that tomorrow.
anyway, that’s day one in athens. messy, chaotic, and exactly what i needed.
