vientiane vibes through a lens: when humidity hits like a wet blanket
okay so i landed in vientiane yesterday with my camera gear feeling like a drowned rat. checked the weather this morning-16.4°C and 91% humidity. great. feels like walking through a lukewarm sponge. my camera lens fogged up before i even made it out the door. pro tip: if you're bringing electronics here, pack silica gel like it's survival gear. *local tip: grab a banana shake from the street cart near pha that luang temple. the woman makes them with sticky rice-weird but fire.
so i wandered toward the mekong river. the air's thick enough to chew, and every breath feels like you're inhaling someone's leftover pho broth. saw a bunch of locals practicing tai chi at dawn-looked like synchronized drowning. heard from a moto driver that during monsoon season, the river floods the night market. said something about crocodiles. not sure if he was messing with me or not.
the photo ops are wild though. golden hour turns the river into liquid amber, but by 10 am it's a steamy mess. stumbled upon this hidden cafe called 'the indigo lounge'-worth checking for wifi that doesn't suck. their sticky rice pudding is legit.
someone told me the patuxai monument's best photographed at dusk when the floodlights come on. also heard a rumor they're building a giant shopping mall next to it. trad vs. capitalism-classic vientiane. if you get restless, nong khai* is just a $3 bus ride away. their floating market's supposed to be insane.
tonight i'm heading to the riverside beer garden. heard the lao beer's watery but the view makes up for it. i just checked and it's...still hovering around 16°C with 91% humidity, so if you're coming, pack three shirts and a towel. maybe invest in a dehumidifier for your room. also, check out this temple guide because half the temples look identical when your camera lens is sweating.
ps. saw a dude selling grilled scorpions. passed. not that hungry yet.
