The Weird Little Corner of Moscow I Found
so i landed in moscow and the first thing i noticed was how weirdly quiet it was for a city this big. like, no honking, no yelling, just...cold air and that faint hum of trams in the distance. i'd just checked and it's 3.6°c there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. anyway, i'm not here to give you a "best of" list-i'm here to tell you about the weird little corner i stumbled into after getting lost on purpose.
"you want the real moscow? go to taganskaya," said the drunk guy at the hostel bar. "but don't trust the kebab stand near the metro."
i did exactly that. walked straight to taganskaya, found the kebab stand, and yeah-it was closed. but next to it was this tiny bookstore that sold only soviet-era maps. i bought one for like 300 rubles and the guy behind the counter just nodded like i'd passed some secret test.
if you get bored, st. petersburg and nizhny novgorod are just a short drive away, but honestly? moscow's got enough weird corners to keep you busy for weeks. i heard that the best coffee in town isn't in a hipster shop but in a basement near tverskaya that smells like old books and burnt toast. someone told me that if you ask for "black lion," they'll give you something that'll keep you awake for two days.
anyway, here's where i ended up:
i also found this random dumpling place that had no sign, just a red lantern. the guy inside didn't speak english, but he made these beef dumplings that were so good i almost cried. no joke. and the tea? tasted like it was brewed in a samovar from 1972.
if you're into offbeat stuff, check out *muzeon park or the winzavod contemporary art center. and if you're feeling brave, try the trekhgorka brewery* for a beer that tastes like it was made by someone's grandpa in a bathtub. (it's not, but that's the vibe.)
anyway, that's my messy moscow story. no lists, no perfect itinerary-just a bunch of weird moments stitched together. hope you find your own weird corner too.
