Segovia: Wind, Walls, and Weird Little Wonders
okay so segovia… i had no idea what i was walking into. just a random train stop from madrid, but holy crap. this place is like stepping into a storybook that got left out in the rain and then dried in the sun with all its pages still crinkled.
first thing i noticed? the aqueduct. it just… appears. no warning. you're strolling down a cobblestone alley and then boom-giant roman arches stretching across the sky like it's showing off. someone told me it's been there for 2,000 years and still doesn't use any mortar. sounds fake, but okay.
i just checked and it's 6.6°c there right now, feels like 4.9°c. so yeah, bring a jacket. or don't. but you'll regret it.
anyway, the alcázar. that castle on the hill? looks like it was built by someone who really loved pointy towers and dramatic silhouettes. i overheard a guy at a cafe say it inspired cinderella's castle. disney probably denies that, but whatever. it's got that vibe.
*the cathedral though? whoa. i walked in thinking "cool, another old church" and then my jaw dropped. stained glass, gold leaf, ceilings that go on forever. there was a little old lady lighting a candle in the corner and i just stood there like an idiot for ten minutes.
if you get bored, toledo and avila are just a short drive away. but honestly? you won't get bored here. segovia's got this sleepy-but-alive energy. people sit outside cafes even when it's cold. they drink coffee slow. they talk loud. it's the kind of place where you forget to check your phone for hours.
i heard from a barista that the best cochinillo (suckling pig) is at this little spot called mesón josé miguel*. said it's crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and the owner will probably tell you a story about his grandmother if you ask nicely. i didn't try it (vegetarian here, sorry), but the smell alone almost converted me.
random tip: don't skip the jewish quarter. it's quiet, narrow, and full of little courtyards with flowerpots and cats. one alley had a wall covered in tiles painted by kids. felt like a secret.
weather's moody-sunny one minute, cloudy the next. but that's part of the charm. segovia doesn't try to be perfect. it just is. and somehow that makes it unforgettable.
want more? check out segovia's official tourism page or tripadvisor's top things to do. but honestly? just go. walk. get lost. that's the best way to see it.
