scunthorpe: a weirdly charming english town you've probably never heard of

so i ended up in scunthorpe by accident. was supposed to be in york but my train got cancelled and the next one was going through this industrial town in lincolnshire. figured, why not? worst case, i get a coffee and wait for the next train. best case... well, i didn't know what the best case was, but i was about to find out.

when i stepped off the train, the first thing i noticed was the smell. not bad, just... metallic. like the town was breathing iron dust. apparently scunthorpe is famous for its steelworks, which i guess explains the industrial vibe. but here's the thing: once you get past the first impression, there's something oddly charming about it. maybe it's the lack of tourists. maybe it's the way people actually look at you when you walk by, like they're curious who you are and what you're doing here.

i started wandering around and stumbled into a little cafe called the grindstone. the barista, a guy named dave, told me they roast their own beans. i asked him what else i should check out, and he just laughed and said, "depends if you like museums or pubs more." classic english answer.

anyway, i decided to hit the north lincolnshire museum first. it's free, which is always a win, and it's got this weird mix of local history and random artifacts. there's a whole section on the iron age, which i guess makes sense given the area's history. but my favorite part was the temporary exhibit on local football legends. i don't even like football, but the stories were hilarious.

after that, i needed a pint. headed to the nearby queen's head pub because it looked old and cozy. inside, it was exactly what you'd expect: dark wood, a few old guys at the bar, and a dog asleep by the fireplace. i ordered a pint of something local and struck up a conversation with the bartender. she told me about a place called the baths hall, which apparently hosts concerts sometimes. "saw the manic street preachers there once," she said. "brilliant show."

now, about the weather. i just checked and it's 3°c with 85% humidity right now. so yeah, bring a jacket. or don't. but if you're the type who gets cold easily, you'll regret it.

if you get bored, lincoln and hull are just a short drive away. but honestly, scunthorpe's worth a day if you're into offbeat places. it's not trying to be anything it's not, and that's kind of refreshing.

i heard from a guy at the train station that the best fish and chips in town is at harry's chippy. he said it's been there since the '70s and they still use the same recipe. i didn't get a chance to try it, but it's on my list for next time.

overall, scunthorpe surprised me. it's not a tourist hotspot, and that's exactly why i liked it. sometimes the best travel stories come from the places you didn't plan to visit.
