San Salvador: Drum Beats, Coffee Dreams, and a Few Too Many Mosquitoes
so here i am, back from another whirlwind in san salvador, and honestly? my brain's still spinning from the heat, the chaos, and the fact that i somehow managed to lose my favorite drumsticks at a roadside pupuserĆa. yeah, that happened. but hey, that's travel, right?
anyway, i just checked and it's *23.06°c there right now, with humidity so thick you could spread it on toast. if you're the type who loves a good sweat while you wander, you're in luck. personally, i was melting faster than a popsicle in july, but the coffee kept me going. speaking of which, if you're hunting for a decent flat white, tipico cafe on avenida la revolución is where it's at. locals swear by it, and after three cups, i was ready to write a love song to their espresso machine.
now, about those neighbors-if you get bored, santa tecla and sonsonate are just a short drive away. i heard from a street drummer (yeah, i asked him for tips) that santa tecla's got this killer weekend market where you can score vintage cymbals for dirt cheap. totally worth the trip if you're into that kind of thing.
and can we talk about the reviews for a sec? someone told me that hotel villa florencia has the best rooftop view in town-but also the loudest air conditioning units known to man. i didn't stay there, but i did sneak up for sunset and yeah, the view's legit. just bring earplugs.
here's a little map to get your bearings:
oh, and if you're into photography (or just pretending to be), the murals in the downtown area are chef's kiss. i dragged my camera everywhere, hoping to catch that perfect golden hour shot. mostly i got sweaty tourists and stray dogs, but hey, that's the charm, right?
for food, don't sleep on el lugar in antiguo cuscatlƔn. it's a bit out of the way, but the seafood soup? life-changing. i heard from a couple of digital nomads at the next table that it's the best hangover cure in the country. not that i needed it. cough.
if you're planning to hit the town at night, la zona rosa* is where you'll find the party. just be ready for some serious reggaeton and maybe a few too many tequila shots. i met a freelance photographer there who swore he'd seen a ghost in the bathroom. i didn't ask for details.
anyway, here are a few snaps i took along the way:
so yeah, that's san salvador in a nutshell: hot, chaotic, and full of surprises. bring sunscreen, a sense of humor, and maybe an extra pair of drumsticks. you never know when you'll need 'em.
