Reykjavik Rhapsody: Lost in the Land of Fire and Ice (and Unexpected Pups)
okay, so reykjavik. what even is reykjavik? it's…a lot. the air smells like nothing and everything all at once. like, geothermal steam mixed with the faint whiff of someone’s amazing fish stew. and the weather? seriously, who invented this? i just checked and it’s… a curious blend of almost sunny and perpetually overcast, hope you like that kind of thing. the humidity is clinging to you like a second skin - 86%! - but the temperature is surprisingly mild, hovering right around 18.5 Celsius. feels like 18.65 though, so don’t underestimate the damp.
i landed and immediately felt like i’d stepped onto another planet. seriously. *Buildings are colorful - not like aggressively cheerful pastel, but more like muted jewel tones. it’s surprisingly cozy, considering how close you are to, you know, volcanic activity. the streets are narrow and winding, perfect for getting delightfully lost. i spent the first hour just wandering, trying to decipher the street signs (thank god for google maps, obviously) and dodging puffins statues.
i'm staying in a little Airbnb near the harbor. super cute, albeit a tiny bit…echoey. my neighbors seem chill - mostly just locals going about their business, muttering in Icelandic. if you get bored, Akureyri is just a short flight away. apparently, it's got a thriving arts scene.
my first day was a whirlwind. i hit up the harbor - the water’s shockingly cold, even in summer. saw a bunch of boats, some seriously impressive architecture, and a guy playing a surprisingly soulful tune on a saxophone. then i braved the Blue Lagoon. yeah, it’s touristy, but honestly? worth it. the silica mud mask felt amazing, and floating in that warm water while the wind whipped around is a uniquely Icelandic experience. someone told me that the lagoon is best visited early in the morning to avoid the biggest crowds - good advice, apparently.
“Don’t be afraid to just walk. Get lost. You’ll find the best stuff that way.” - a local barista, probably.
Food: i’ve been living off pylsur (Icelandic hot dogs) and skyr (a type of yogurt). pylsur are everywhere and surprisingly addictive - get one with everything! skyr is…different. it’s tangy. i’m still figuring it out. i might try some traditional lamb soup tomorrow. i heard that it’s like a hug in a bowl.
“Beware the seagulls. They’re ruthless.” - another local, who seemed to have a personal vendetta against birds.
Gear List (because, let's be real, planning is half the fun):
Waterproof jacket (*essential)
Layers, layers, layers (seriously)
Good walking shoes (you’ll do a lot of walking)
Swimsuit (for the Blue Lagoon, duh)
Camera (obviously!)
Portable charger (for all the photos and map-checking)
I went to a local board on a travel forum and someone commented that the Northern Lights might make an appearance later this month-crossing my fingers! I’m also thinking about a day trip to see the Golden Circle. Apparently, Gullfoss waterfall is breathtaking.
tonight, i'm hoping to catch some live music at a pub downtown. the vibe seems pretty cool. i heard that the small cafes around *Laugavegur* are good for people-watching. I also plan to browse the shops, because finding that perfect souvenir is a must.
and the pressure is 1009, and humidity is a whopping 86.
overall, reykjavik is a sensory overload in the best possible way. it’s a city of contrasts - modern and ancient, calm and chaotic, cold and… surprisingly welcoming. i have a feeling i’m going to need a week (or two) to even scratch the surface of this place.
check out Visit Iceland for more info, and maybe Yelp for restaurant recommendations. and if you are feeling adventurous, look into some eco-tours - there is a website called Iceland Eco Tours, I read some positive reviews!
