Reykjavik Rhapsody: Lost in the Land of Fire and Ice
okay, so i kinda just… landed. reykjavik. the numbers danced in my head - 1496511 and 1643427847 - felt like some weird cosmic code. and the weather? chef's kiss. i just checked and it's… a solid, unwavering frigidity. like someone turned the dial all the way to 'arctic'. the feels-like temperature is downright brutal. seriously, pack more than just a cute hat.
this trip was a total impulse. i saw a ridiculously cheap flight and thought, 'why not?' i'm usually all about meticulously planned itineraries, but this? this is pure chaos. i'm embracing the unplanned. mostly because i'm still recovering from a massive creative block and figured a change of scenery (read: extreme temperature change) might help.
the air here smells… clean. aggressively so. like someone scrubbed the entire planet with glacial water. i'm staying in a tiny apartment near Laugavegur, the main shopping street. it's surprisingly… cozy? the building itself is ancient, all charmingly crooked angles and exposed beams. i swear i heard a ghost humming Icelandic folk music last night. probably just the wind. or maybe not.
so far, the highlights have been… well, mostly just existing in this bizarre landscape. the light is incredible, even with the perpetual grey skies. it's this soft, diffused glow that makes everything look almost dreamlike. i spent a few hours wandering around Harpa Concert Hall. seriously stunning architecture. definitely worth checking out. you can book tickets and learn about upcoming performances on their website: https://www.harpa.is/en.
i heard that the Sky Lagoon is amazing. someone told me that the silica mud masks are worth the hype (and the price tag). i'm thinking of checking it out tomorrow. although, honestly, just braving the cold is an accomplishment. it's not for the faint of heart, this Icelandic chill. *Be prepared! i’ve heard rumors the wait for a spot in the lagoon can be intense, so book ahead via TripAdvisor: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g560319-d218534-Reviews-Sky_Lagoon-Reykjavik_Iceland.html.
for food? i've been mostly surviving on hot dogs from Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur. apparently, they're a Reykjavik institution. and i can see why. they’re surprisingly good. Don't skip* this experience. i’m also trying to find a decent coffee shop - my current caffeine levels are dangerously low. i saw a recommendation on Yelp for a place called Coffee Bar Reykjavik - might check that out: https://www.yelp.com/biz/coffee-bar-reykjavik-reykjavik.
the locals seem… unfazed by the cold. they have this weirdly cheerful attitude, like they're all in on some cosmic joke. if you get bored, Akureyri is just a short drive away, and the Golden Circle is always a good day trip. i'm thinking of renting a car for a couple of days. i am honestly feeling the need for some serious geothermal soak time.
right now, i'm just trying to process the sensory overload. the constant wind, the stark landscapes, the feeling of being utterly, wonderfully small in the face of nature. it's a lot. but it's exactly what i needed. i'm not sure where i'll end up next, but for now, i'm happy to be lost in Reykjavik. and maybe, just maybe, find a little bit of clarity amidst the ice and fire. this place feels… ancient. and the stories it holds? i can almost taste them. maybe i will try a local beer at a pub tonight - someone said the Einstök White Ale is a must-try.
Oh, and the humidity is 100% - so good news for my skin, bad news for my hair. seriously, this weather is something else. it's making me really miss sunshine. But hey, at least the views are epic!
