reggio di calabria: where the mess meets the mediterranean

so yeah, reggio di calabria. didn’t expect much honestly, but this place slaps you sideways with its chaos. just landed yesterday, got absolutely drenched in that 93% humidity air-feels like breathing soup. someone told me that the locals joke about needing a boat instead of an umbrella here. and like, they’re not wrong? spent yesterday wrestling with luggage through cobblestones while the pressure clung at 1011mb. *strait of messina is basically the city’s noisy neighbor, constant foghorn soundtrack. if you run out of things to do, messina’s just a ferry hop away-heard their fish market makes reggio look like a kiddie pool.

the vibe here? think crumbling baroque balconies draped in laundry, cats napping in trash cans, and nonnas yelling from windows. stumbled into this tiny bakery
via marina-guy shoved a piece of ‘nduja arancino in my face before i could even order. spicy as hell, but worth it. i just checked and it’s currently 7.87°C out there, which feels like 6.66°C. so bundle up unless you enjoy shivering while eating gelato. speaking of which-someone told me the best pistachio gelato is hidden in a alley behind piazza italia, but also warned me it’s run by a mob cousin. so, you know, maybe avoid making eye contact.

did i mention the weather? yeah. forgot sunscreen yesterday, now my face matches
castello aragonese’s bricks. locals kept muttering about ‘that crazy northern wind’-apparently it’s a thing. also heard the bronze statue of riace is back in town after some drama. someone whispered it’s cursed? who knows. spent hours getting lost near lungomare falcomatà-views are unreal, but the sea smells like regret. found this dive bar where the bartender spoke zero english but made me something strong.

for real though, if you’re thinking of coming: pack layers. that 7.87°C temp ain’t playing. and maybe skip the fancy hotel-heard from a drunk guy that
hostel del mare* has bunkbeds with sea views. also, tripadvisor lies about half the spots. yelp’s better but still sketchy. local tourism board recommended some hidden beaches-might check those out later.

anyway, reggio’s a mess. but it’s a beautiful, loud, salty mess. and honestly? kinda obsessed. the end.
