Mumbai Musings: Numbers, Heat, and a Whole Lotta Chai
okay, so i'm still processing *Mumbai. where do you even start? i landed here with just a vague plan and a desperate need for decent street food. the numbers floating around my head - 1266124 and 1356581279 - felt like some kind of cryptic blessing or curse. honestly, iām not sure. maybe theyāre phone numbers? or some kind of ancient code? anyway, the weather here is⦠intense. i just checked and it's scorching, there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. the feels-like temperature is even higher, pushing 32 degrees Celsius. itās humid, like someoneās breathing on you constantly. the air smells like spices, exhaust fumes, and something vaguely floral. a complex aroma, i guess?

iām staying in Colaba, which is chaotic but charming. the buildings are a beautiful kind of crumbling, painted in faded pastels. the locals areā¦warm, but also intensely focused on getting where theyāre going. dodging auto-rickshaws is a full-time sport here. if you get bored, Pune is just a short ride away.
the streets* are a sensory overload. vendors hawking everything imaginable, the constant chatter, the honking - itās a beautiful kind of madness. i spent yesterday wandering through Chor Bazaar, which was a total goldmine for vintage finds. i scored a really cool embroidered jacket for next to nothing. (check out https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g107452-Activities-Chor_Bazaar_Mumbai_Maharashtra.html for more info).
food, oh god, the food. iāve been living off vada pav and pav bhaji. i heard that the best pav bhaji is down near Mohammed Ali Road, but it's insanely crowded. someone told me that the street food vendors on Lombard Road are a little dodgy - stick to places that are busy with locals.
iāve been trying to capture the essence of this city with my camera, but it's almost impossible. everything is soā¦alive. the light is incredible, especially during golden hour. iām thinking of taking a photography workshop - maybe something like https://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=photography+workshop&find_loc=Mumbai%2C+Maharashtra.
iām not a huge fan of tourist traps - the Gateway of India is pretty, sure, but itās packed. iād rather explore the smaller, less-visited neighborhoods. thereās a whole world to discover beyond the main attractions. i've been getting tips from some of the local artisans -- totally worth it!
seriously, the neighbors areā¦interesting. the buildings seem to lean into each other, creating a maze of narrow lanes. everyoneās got a story, and if you listen closely, you can hear snippets of conversations, laughter, and arguments floating on the air. itās a city that never sleeps. iām thinking of trying a yoga class - https://www.yogajb.com/mumbai/ is offering some great options.
the humidity isn't helping my hair. iām fairly certain itās developed a life of its own. and the constant noiseā¦itās a lot to take in. but it's also exhilarating. it's pushing me outside my comfort zone, and for that, iām grateful.
i'm heading to Dhobi Ghat tomorrow - apparently, it's a sight to behold (and a great place for some unique photos). iām definitely going to need a lot of chai to get through this heat. and maybe a strong filter for my photos. this place is intense.
