Melun in the Rain: A Messy Day in the Suburbs

woke up in this tiny hotel near the Seine, feeling like i'd been hit by a truck. the weather's brutal-cold, damp, and just miserable enough to make you want to stay in bed all day. i just checked and it's 5°c with 89% humidity there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.

melun's not exactly a tourist hotspot, but that's what makes it interesting. it's one of those places where you can actually see how real people live, not just the polished version for visitors. the town center has this weird mix of old stone buildings and modern shops that don't quite match. i wandered around for hours, getting lost in the narrow streets and wondering if i'd ever find my way back.

*the castle is probably the main attraction here. it's this massive stone fortress sitting on a hill, looking like it's been there forever. someone told me that the view from the top is worth the climb, but i chickened out when i saw how many stairs there were. maybe next time.

if you get bored,
fontainebleau and versailles are just a short drive away. i heard from a barista that the forest around fontainebleau is perfect for getting lost in nature, which sounded exactly like my kind of plan until it started raining again.

food in melun is surprisingly good. i stumbled into this tiny creperie that smelled amazing, and the owner insisted i try his special with cheese and mushrooms. it was so good i almost cried.
tripadvisor says there's a great bistro nearby, but honestly, the hole-in-the-wall places are where it's at.

i keep thinking about how melun feels like a place that's been forgotten by time, but in a good way. it's not trying to be anything it's not, which is refreshing. the locals seem to know each other, and there's this sense of community that you don't get in bigger cities. someone mentioned that the Saturday market is the best time to visit, but i was here on a Wednesday and still found plenty to do.

if you're the type who needs constant excitement, melun might drive you crazy. but if you're okay with slow days, good food, and a bit of history, it's perfect. just bring a raincoat and maybe a book for when you get tired of walking.

yelp* has some decent reviews of local spots, though i found that just asking people worked better. the guy at the bakery recommended a little park by the river that was surprisingly peaceful, even with the gray sky overhead.

melun won't change your life, but it might make you appreciate the smaller, quieter places that exist just outside the tourist radar. and honestly, that's kind of the point of travel, isn't it?
