Manila Mayhem: Sweat, Street Food, and Seriously Sticky Air

okay, so like, i’m pretty sure my brain is currently operating on approximately 37% efficiency. i landed in manila yesterday and it’s… a lot. a lot like someone threw a kaleidoscope at a karaoke bar and then added a dash of monsoon. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. the humidity is clinging to you like a desperate ex. 80% humidity, seriously. feels like 23.5, temp’s hovering around 23.05, pressure’s a solid 1013. it’s a vibe, you know?

first things first, the smells. oh god, the smells. it’s a symphony of sizzling pork, exhaust fumes, and something vaguely floral that i’m pretty sure is just trying to mask the other two. i’m already regretting my choice of socks.

i spent the morning wandering around intramuros, which is… well, it’s old. really old. like, ‘spanish colonial’ old. it’s kinda beautiful, honestly, but also intensely hot. i grabbed a halo-halo from a street vendor - basically shaved ice with all the tropical fruit you can imagine - and it was a religious experience. i mean, it was sweet, it was cold, it was… a lot.

i overheard some drunk advice from a guy at the hostel - he was claiming to be a retired accountant who’d spent the last decade traveling Southeast Asia - that you absolutely have to try the adobo. apparently, it’s the soul of manila. i’m cautiously optimistic. someone told me that the best adobo is at Lydia’s, but i’m also getting a weird vibe from that place. like, ‘too good to be true’ vibes. i’ll report back.

my gear list is currently a chaotic mess of crumpled receipts and half-eaten snacks. here’s the gist:

worn-out sneakers: essential. seriously. you’ll be walking a lot.
*portable charger: because your phone will die faster than you can say ‘salamat’.
*insect repellent: trust me on this one. the mosquitos are vicious.
*a ridiculously oversized hat: for sun protection and general coolness.
*a phrasebook: because my tagalog is limited to ‘hello’ and ‘thank you’.
*a backup camera:* because i’m a photographer and i’m prone to spontaneous bursts of creativity (and blurry photos).

i stumbled across this amazing little street art scene in Poblacion. it’s insane. like, murals everywhere. i even tried to sketch something, but my artistic skills peaked in elementary school.

i’m staying in a tiny guesthouse near Quiapo Market. the neighbors are… interesting. if you get bored, [Manila] is just a short drive away. they’re all incredibly loud and seem to operate on a completely different schedule than me. one of them keeps yelling at pigeons. it’s… charming, in a chaotic sort of way.

i found this incredible little cafe called Grind & Co. - they make the best iced coffee I’ve had in ages. it’s a lifesaver in this heat.

i’m planning on checking out the jeepneys tomorrow - they’re like these crazy, brightly colored public vehicles that are a Manila institution. i heard that they’re notoriously difficult to flag down, but i’m determined.

i’m also trying to avoid getting scammed. i heard that some vendors overcharge tourists, so i’m sticking to places that seem popular with locals. i’m trying to find a good deal on some vintage clothes too - there are some amazing shops in Binondo Chinatown.

“Just embrace the chaos, kid. Manila doesn’t care about your plans. It just… happens.” - a grizzled taxi driver who looked like he’d seen it all.

i’m honestly exhausted, but i’m also strangely exhilarated. this place is overwhelming, but it’s also… alive. it’s a sensory overload, a beautiful mess, and i wouldn’t trade it for anything.

i’m heading out to find some more street food. wish me luck. and maybe send me some bug spray.

“Don’t trust anyone who offers you a ‘special’ tour. They’re probably just trying to sell you something you don’t need.” - a local tour guide who clearly wasn’t thrilled with his job.

Seriously, get some bug spray. You’ll thank me later.
