Madison's Frozen Canvas: Street Art, Secrets, and Subzero Shenanigans

madison, wisconsin. i came here to leave my mark, but the cold came here to erase me. the weather's a beast: temp 1.07°c, feels like -4.41°c, humidity 79% - so it's damp cold that gets in your marrow. pressure 1009, sea level 1009, ground level 975? whatever, my bones are the barometer.

i've been seeing these numbers spray-painted everywhere: 5257754 and 1840002467. on a brick wall by the capitol, on a dumpster behind the co-op. is it a code? a phone number from the 90s? i tagged 'hello' next to it in neon pink, just to say i was here too.

first, here's where i'm wandering:

. yeah, that's the spot. cold as hell.

the city's a mix of college kids spilling out of bars and old ladies walking poodles. the streets are my canvas, but today my hands are too numb to hold a can. i heard from a local that the best murals are in the industrial corridor off willy street, but the security guard steve has a german shepherd that doesn't like artists.

overheard at the月色 coffee shop: 'if you're looking for a warm place to sketch, the library's alright, but the coffee shop on gilman has the best wifi and the worst attitudes.'

a graffiti legend told me: 'don't paint on the brick buildings on state street, the owner's a history nerd and will research your ass and send you a bill.'

from a drunk guy at the bar: 'the numbers 5257754 and 1840002467? that's the combination to the city's secret warming shelter. or it's the code for the best hash. i forget.'

i've been mapping out walls. the lake's frozen solid, looks like a giant, cracked mirror. here's a pic from a few days ago:

Frozen Lake Mendota in Madison

. that's lake mendota, or what's left of it.

for art supplies, i hit up art guy supply - they've got Montana Gold in every color and don't ask why you need ten cans of white.

if you want to see some local art, check out the madison museum of contemporary art on tripadvisor. honestly, it's hit or miss.

food-wise, after a night of tagging, i need something greasy. yelp says thebroken vessel has the best fries, but i heard a rumor the cook spits in the food if you're rude.

neighbors: if you get bored of madison's cold shoulder, milwaukee's an hour away with its own gritty riverwalk, and chicago's three hours south for the real art scene.

i've been trying to decode those numbers. 5257754 might be a gps coordinate? but it doesn't match. 1840002467 is too long for a phone. maybe it's a bank account for a rich artist. or a cipher.

the weather's been consistent: temp min 0.9°c, max 1.57°c, so it never warmed up. feels like between -4 and -5. humidity 79% means my paint takes forever to dry, and when it does, it cracks.

someone told me that the old factory by the railroad is haunted, but i think it's just the wind howling through broken windows.

i scored a sweet spot under the highway overpass - dry, somewhat hidden, and the acoustics are great for listening to trains. here's a pic of my latest piece:

Street art under overpass

. that's not my work, but gives the vibe.

for more local intel, check the madison street art facebook group - they post wall alerts and cop sightings.

i'm heading out again tonight, if my fingers don't fall off. the numbers are still on the wall, and i need to add my own. maybe i'll spray 0.0 above them, like a score. or a weather report.

this city's a messy, cold, beautiful disaster. and i'm just a tired artist trying to leave a mark before the snow covers it all.

peace.
