Lost in the Echoes of Los Angeles: A Drummer's Dizzying Detour
okay, so. los angeles. right? everyone’s got a story about la. mine’s…well, it’s still unfolding, honestly. i was supposed to be in seattle this week, laying down tracks for a new indie band, but a scheduling snafu landed me here instead. a very last-minute scheduling snafu. and i’m not gonna lie, i’m a little overwhelmed.
I just checked and the air feels like a damp hug - fourteen point eight five degrees, they say, but it feels like a lukewarm bath. ninety-one percent humidity? who knew la could be…sticky? i’m used to the dry rattle of the pacific northwest, not this…this clinging. if you get bored, san diego and santa barbara are just a hop, skip, and a jump down the coast.
I’ve been crashing on a friend’s couch in Silver Lake - which, by the way, is loud. like, constantly. someone’s always blasting something, or practicing yoga in the street, or having a very intense conversation about kombucha. it’s…stimulating. i guess. i spent yesterday wandering around, trying to find a decent coffee shop that wasn’t charging twelve dollars for a latte. found one eventually - check out this place on Yelp. decent, but pricey.
I stumbled upon this amazing vintage store in Echo Park - check it out on TripAdvisor - seriously, a goldmine. i almost bought a sequined jumpsuit, but my bank account staged a tiny revolt. i’m a touring drummer, not a millionaire, you know?
“Don’t trust the parking. Seriously. Just…don’t.”
Someone told me that the Griffith Observatory is a must-see. apparently, the views are insane. i’m thinking of heading there tomorrow, if i can wrestle myself away from the siren song of vintage clothing and overpriced coffee. i also heard that the food trucks around downtown are surprisingly good - this forum has some recommendations.
I’m trying to soak it all in, you know? the chaos, the sunshine, the sheer weirdness of it all. it’s a lot. a lot a lot. i’m definitely missing my drum kit and the familiar smell of stale beer in a dive bar, but hey, at least i’m getting a story out of it. and maybe, just maybe, i’ll find that sequined jumpsuit.
pro-tips for surviving la (so far):
Hydrate: seriously, the humidity is sneaky.
*Wear comfortable shoes: you’ll be doing a lot of walking.
*Embrace the chaos: it’s part of the charm (or insanity).
*Don’t make eye contact: it’s a survival tactic.
*Check out the local music scene:* this website lists upcoming shows.
okay, i’m off to find more coffee. and maybe a sequined jumpsuit. wish me luck.
