Lisbon’s a Blur: Rain, Pastel Buildings, and a Whole Lotta Lost Socks

@Felix Drake3/8/2026blog

okay, so i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm espresso. 6546831… seriously, what even is that number? it just keeps popping into my head. and 1504975687? don’t ask. i’m not even going to try. it’s like a persistent static hum in my brain.

Lisbon. wow. it’s… intense. the air smells like salt and something vaguely floral, maybe jasmine, but also a little bit like wet concrete. it’s a weird combo, honestly. the humidity is clinging to everything - my camera, my hair, my sanity. feels like 16.19, temp-wise, and the pressure’s sitting at 1017. it’s… there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.

I landed yesterday and immediately got lost. like, properly lost. down a maze of cobblestone streets so narrow you could practically touch both buildings at once. it was glorious. i ended up at this tiny tasca, ‘O Baco,’ tucked away on a side street. the owner, a guy named Ricardo, looked like he’d wrestled a bear and won. he poured me a glass of vinho verde that tasted like sunshine and regret. someone told me that the best pastel de nata are at Pastéis de Belém - seriously, don’t miss those.

I’ve been wandering around Alfama, which is basically a giant, crumbling amphitheater of a neighborhood. it’s all hills and staircases and the sound of Fado music drifting from open doorways. it’s beautiful, but also exhausting. my calves are screaming. i swear i’m going to need a sherpa.

Speaking of exhausting, i spent three hours yesterday trying to figure out the public transport. it’s… an experience. let’s just say i’ve developed a deep and abiding respect for the Portuguese metro system. it’s like a metal beast that occasionally spits you out in the wrong direction. i almost ended up in Sintra, which, honestly, would have been amazing, but i was already sweating like a marathon runner.

I found this incredible vintage shop near the Time Out Market - ‘Lost & Found.’ it’s a chaotic explosion of silk scarves, embroidered jackets, and ridiculously oversized sunglasses. i scored a vintage Levi’s denim jacket for a steal. it’s probably covered in someone else’s memories, which is kind of cool.

Here’s the gear list, because apparently, i need to document everything:
Camera (duh)
Rain jacket (essential)
Comfortable shoes (seriously, prioritize these)
Portable charger (my phone is a black hole)
Phrasebook (because my Portuguese is… limited)
A healthy dose of wanderlust

I overheard gossip at a bar last night about a hidden courtyard in the Bairro Alto - apparently, it’s a secret spot for street art. i’m on the hunt. i heard that it’s only accessible after dark and guarded by a grumpy old man named Manuel.

I’m staying in this Airbnb - it’s basically a converted attic with a stunning view of the Tagus River. it’s a little cramped, but it’s got character. i’m sharing it with a guy named Leo, who’s a freelance photographer. he’s obsessed with capturing the light in Lisbon. we’ve been exchanging stories and complaining about jet lag.

I checked TripAdvisor and Yelp - the reviews are mixed. Some people rave about the food, others complain about the crowds. i’m leaning towards the ‘crowds are worth it’ camp.

Seriously, if you’re planning a trip to Lisbon, do yourself a favor and check out the LX Factory. it’s a converted industrial complex filled with cool shops, restaurants, and street art. it’s a bit touristy, but it’s still a fun place to hang out. I heard that the cocktails are amazing.

And don’t forget to get lost. Seriously. That’s where the magic happens.

I’m off to find that secret courtyard. wish me luck.
