Kyoto's Static Hum: Rain, Ramen, and Really Weird Vibes
okay, so, i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm green tea. 2129537 and 1392099278 - don’t ask. it’s just…numbers. i landed in Kyoto yesterday, and honestly, it’s like stepping into a slightly faded anime. the air’s thick, like wet velvet, and the rain’s been doing this weird thing - not a downpour, more like a constant, insistent drizzle that clings to everything. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. the pressure’s at 1020, humidity’s hovering around 99, and the ground level is a surprisingly low 999 - feels like you’re walking on a sponge. it’s unsettling, but in a good way, you know? like, ‘this is not normal, but i kinda dig it.’
I’m staying in this tiny guesthouse near Gion - it’s basically a converted warehouse with a surprisingly good onsen. the owner, Hiroshi-san, keeps offering me pickled plums. i appreciate the gesture, i really do, but i’m starting to think i’m developing a slight aversion. someone told me that the best ramen is found down a side street near the Kamogawa River, but i’m still trying to decipher the map. it’s a chaotic mess of tiny alleys and even tinier shops.
Speaking of chaos, the neighbors are…interesting. there’s this family who runs a tiny pottery shop - they’re incredibly intense about their clay, and they glare at anyone who even looks at their work. and then there’s this guy who plays a shakuhachi flute on the street corner every evening. it’s beautiful, but also deeply unsettling. if you get bored, Osaka is just a short drive away, apparently. i’m not planning on going.
I spent the afternoon wandering through Fushimi Inari-taisha, which is, like, a million red torii gates. it’s beautiful, obviously, but also incredibly crowded. i felt like a sardine in a very ornate, very Japanese sardine can. i almost tripped over a group of school kids dressed in ridiculously elaborate kimonos. it was…a lot.
I found this little tea house tucked away in a side street - it was called ‘The Silent Sparrow.’ the tea was amazing, strong and slightly bitter, and the owner, a woman named Akari-san, gave me some seriously cryptic advice. she said, and i quote, ‘the rain remembers everything.’ i have no idea what that means, but it stuck with me.
I’m trying to capture the feeling of this place - the quiet intensity, the strange beauty, the overwhelming sense of…something. i’m thinking of doing a series of photos focusing on the textures - the wet stone, the rough wood, the faded paper of the torii gates. i need to find a decent film lab here, though. my memory card is already full.
I overheard some tourists arguing about whether or not to visit the Golden Pavilion. one guy was practically screaming about how it’s “overrated.” another woman just kept repeating, “it’s beautiful, it’s beautiful.” i’m leaning towards the “it’s beautiful, it’s beautiful” camp, honestly. it’s a classic for a reason.
I’m heading to Nishiki Market tomorrow - apparently, it’s a foodie paradise. i’m hoping to find some interesting snacks and maybe even a decent matcha ice cream. i need something to counteract the pickled plums.
*Pro-Tip: Wear comfortable shoes. Seriously. You’ll be doing a lot of walking. Also, learn a few basic Japanese phrases. It’ll go a long way. Don’t be afraid to get lost. Some of the best discoveries happen when you wander off the beaten path. And* for the love of all that is holy, don’t try to haggle at the markets. It’s considered rude. I heard that the best ramen is actually at Ichiran - check out their Yelp page: https://www.yelp.com/. And if you're looking for more Kyoto adventures, TripAdvisor has some great ideas: https://www.tripadvisor.com/. I also found a local forum with some really helpful tips: https://www.kyotoguide.org/.
Okay, I’m officially exhausted. Time for more green tea and a very long soak in the onsen. Goodnight, world. Or, you know, good evening. Whatever.
