kumamoto: where the weather's got a mind of its own

welp, landed in kumamoto and immediately got reminded why i shoot film instead of digital - this humidity clings to everything like a cheap perfume. i just checked and it's...that damp, lukewarm sweater kind of day, hope you brought extra socks. the locals swear by this one bakery near the castle, but heard their matcha croissants are either divine or a crime against pastry, no in-between. *kumamoto castle looks like it swallowed a whole lot of history in those stone walls, though.

spent yesterday chasing light through
shimotori shopping arcade, which feels like walking through a neon-lit time capsule. someone told me the best takoyaki is hidden in this alley near the station, but only if you can spot the stand with the handwritten sign that looks like it drew it after three bottles of shochu. pro tip: if your camera fogged up, shove it in a rice bag - works better than silica gel.

if you get restless,
nagasaki is basically a train ride away for that whole atomic bomb museum vibe - heavy but hauntingly beautiful. tried finding this rumored izakaya where they serve horse sashimi, but locals just gave me weird looks when i asked. turns out it's not a thing, who knew? stumbled into a tiny onsen* instead - sulfur water never felt so humbling after 10 hours of chasing light.

heard the tourist office gives out free maps that don't suck, but you have to ask in japanese or they'll just stare at you like you suggested eating sushi with chopsticks made of chopsticks. tripadvisor says the castle grounds are worth it, but skip the paid garden - real photographers find beauty in the cracks.

yelp kept pushing this ramen spot with robotic booths, but the real magic's in the alley markets where the grandmas run the show. if your stomach's acting up, there's this pharmacy near the station that sells those magical stomach pills everyone swears by. japan-guide says the best views are from mt. kumamoto at dawn, but only if you don't mind hiking in fog thicker than my camera bag's excuses.
