Kagoshima: Where the Volcano Smokes and the Ramen Steams
so here i am in kagoshima, sitting in a tiny ramen shop that smells like pork fat and nostalgia. the weather's doing that weird thing where it's 15.77°c but feels like 14.55°c, which basically means i'm wearing a hoodie and regretting it. humidity's at 44%, so my hair's not a total disaster yet, but give it an hour.
i just checked and it's kinda breezy with a slight bite there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.
anyway, the real star here isn't the weather-it's sakurajima. that massive volcano across the bay just casually puffing smoke like it's no big deal. locals don't even flinch. i overheard someone say, "oh that? it erupted twice this morning. want more kimchi?" classic kagoshima energy.
if you get bored, kumamoto and kagoshima are just a short drive away, but honestly? i'd stay here forever. the onsen culture alone is worth the trip. someone told me about this hidden rotenburo (outdoor bath) where you can soak while staring at sakurajima. apparently it's the kind of place where you forget your own name.
i heard that the local shochu here will knock you sideways if you're not careful-it's like vodka's feisty cousin. and don't even get me started on the black pork. i had kurobuta tonkatsu for lunch and i'm still dreaming about it.
for real though, check out the samurai district if you're into history. it's not as crowded as some other places, and the old houses are hauntingly beautiful. i felt like i'd stepped into a samurai movie-minus the dramatic music.
also, pro tip: bring a face mask. not for covid, but for the occasional volcanic ash that drifts in like uninvited glitter. it's just part of life here.
and if you're wondering about nightlife, don't expect tokyo-level chaos. kagoshima's more like a slow burn-think cozy izakayas, live shamisen music, and maybe a karaoke bar where the owner sings enka better than anyone should.
last thing: someone warned me that the ferry to sakurajima sells out fast in the morning, so get there early unless you want to wait around like a tourist. which, let's be honest, we all are at some point.
anyway, i'm off to find more ramen. or maybe just stand by the bay and watch the volcano do its thing. either way, kagoshima's got me hooked.
