jakarta's forgotten fashion alley that smells like regrets and coffee

Jakarta's forgotten fashion alley that smells like regrets and coffee i didn't plan to walk into this place it was more like i got lost between some brick buildings and my phone died and suddenly there was this narrow street where people were selling things that looked like they belonged in a 70s disco. the heat here is like when you're wrapped in a sauna towel and someone's blowing a hair dryer in your face which doesn't exactly scream 'comfortable' but here we are at 30.83 degrees and it's either tropical paradise or a sauna with a view

now this alley isn't exactly tourist trap material but i decided to stick around because i saw someone wearing a jacket that looked like it belonged to a rockstar who’d blinked instead of dying and immediately regretted it. the clothes here are all secondhand gems but with a side of mystery like this vendor who kept muttering in indonesian while polishing a brass lamp that might've been stolen from a colonial-era palace. i didn't ask but i assume it's because he's either cursed or just really into preservation

the weather’s been brutal right? i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. my friends back home would call this 'summer complexity' but here it feels like the air itself is trying to peel off my skin. the humidity’s at 55% which sounds friendly but it's like being trapped in a sweaty sock. one of the neighbors kept yelling about 'kelinci' which i think is a local term for something that ruins fashion displays but i can't confirm. probably a giant snake or a guy with a chicken. either way, don't ask for details

i heard that this alley was once part of a bigger market but it got closed down after some...incident. overheard rumors say it involves stolen textiles and a guy who set fire to his own stall. others claim it's haunted by the ghost of a tailor who couldn't pay his debts. i didn't see any ghosts but i did find this amazing pair of vintage sunglasses that looked like they'd survived a meteor strike. impossible to tell if they're real or just really good at mimicking nostalgia though

pro-tip? if you get lost here carry snacks and a strong sense of direction. also avoid eye contact with the old man who walks a scooter past. he'll either give you directions or a weird look that feels like he knows something you don't. i met him once and he said something about 'time loops' but i left before he could explain. turns out he's also a coffee snob which makes me either jealous or mildly suspicious

someone told me that this alley is the best place to find vinyl records that are older than most of the people buying them. another person warned me about the street food here saying the satay tastes like 'if your grandma tried to make it while high on ambiguity.' i took that as a compliment because i love satay that much. the reviews on TripAdvisor are a mixed bag. most of them are either five stars from people who didn't realize it's technically abandoned or one-star from someone who slipped on a banana peel. yelp has more accuracy but their rating system is just as useless. check it out for yourself at tripadvisor.com/jakarta-fanatic or yelp.com/real-deals

the maps.google.com link below might help if you're lost. i used it twice to find this alley and once to avoid getting trampled by a group of teenagers who thought it was a 'secret concert venue.' here's the iframe with all the magic:

i took three photos here. the first is a vintage typewriter left in a corner like it's auditioning for a role in a silent film. the second shows a wall covered in scribbles that look like they were drawn by a kid who swallowed a box of crayons. the third is a rusty gate that won't open unless you whisper to it. probably not a metaphor but you never know. here are the Unsplash links:

the real question now is whether this alley deserves a sequel. i’m already planning to come back with a blanket and a flashlight to investigate the alleged haunting. also, universal music group’s blog has a section on vintage fashion that might be useful. i included it here: univermusicgroup.com/vintage-stories. don’t miss the part about 90s band tees in kathmandu. weird, right?

if you're bored, surabaya's comic book stores are just a short drive away. don’t say i didn't warn you about the traffic that turns into a living thing at 7 am. the local blogger instagram has a post about this place that's worth checking: junianalley.ikes for more random urban explorations. finally, if you need coffee, there's a place called black roast that serves espresso so strong it might start a civil war. their website is blackroastindonesia.com and it's probably the only thing that will keep you sane here.
