Jaipur's Dust and Dreams: A Botanist's Unexpected Detour
okay, so. jaipur. i wasn’t supposed to be in jaipur. i was tracking a rare species of desert succulent in Rajasthan, you know, the kind that blooms only under a specific lunar cycle? super niche, i know. that’s my life. but my jeep decided to have a full-blown existential crisis about halfway between here and… well, somewhere else. left me stranded, basically.
and honestly? it’s been… chaotic. in a good way, mostly. i’ve spent the last few days wandering around, trying not to sweat through my field clothes (which, let’s be real, are not ideal for this climate). i just checked and it's hovering around twenty-seven degrees, with a humidity level that feels like a damp hug. hope you like that kind of thing.
I’ve been staying in this tiny guesthouse near *Tripolia Bazaar. It’s… rustic. Let’s go with rustic. The owner, a lovely woman named Priya, keeps offering me chai and insisting I try her homemade lassi. I’m pretty sure it’s laced with something, but it’s delicious, so I’m not complaining.
I’ve been sketching a lot. The colors here are insane. The pink sandstone, the vibrant textiles, the sheer explosion of life even in the cracks of the pavement. I’m trying to capture it all, but it feels impossible. It’s like trying to bottle sunshine.
“Don’t go near the old clock tower after dark,” someone mumbled to me at a chai stall. “They say it’s haunted by a sad raja.” Drunk advice, probably, but still… spooky.
I spent a morning at Nahargarh Fort. The views are incredible, obviously. You can see the whole city sprawling out below you. It’s a bit touristy, but worth it for the panorama. I even managed to identify a few interesting plant species clinging to the rocks - tenacious little things. I’m adding them to my notes.
If you get bored, Udaipur and Jodhpur are just a short drive away. I might have to check them out if this jeep situation doesn’t resolve itself soon.
I’ve been trying to find a decent botanical garden, but so far, no luck. There’s a small park near Albert Hall Museum, but it’s mostly ornamental flowers. Still, I spotted a few interesting pollinators buzzing around.
I overheard a couple of guys arguing about the best place to get jalebi near Bapu Bazaar. Apparently, there’s a decades-long rivalry between two vendors. I’m going to investigate. For science, of course. You can check out some reviews on Yelp here: https://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=jalebi&find_loc=Jaipur%2C+Rajasthan%2C+India.
Someone told me that the best textiles are found in the smaller, less-touristy shops. Apparently, you have to haggle hard, though. I’m terrible at haggling. I’ll probably end up paying five times what I should. But hey, supporting local artisans, right?
I’m also trying to find some information on traditional medicinal plants used in the region. I found a forum with some interesting discussions: https://www.indiamarkets.com/health-beauty/traditional-medicinal-plants-rajasthan/. It’s a slow process, but I’m learning a lot.
Honestly, this unplanned detour has been… refreshing. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the best discoveries happen when you’re lost. And that chai really is* addictive. I’m also checking out this local board for events: https://www.jaipurtimes.com/.
I’m still waiting for a mechanic to fix my jeep. In the meantime, I’ll keep exploring, sketching, and drinking chai. Wish me luck.
