Dust & Echoes in Valoria: A Sticky Situation

@Eva Soler3/6/2026blog

okay, so, i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm coffee. 2348595… that’s the number of times i’ve said ‘like’ in the last 48 hours. and 1566322480? honestly, who even knows. it just is. i landed in Valoria yesterday, and it’s… intense. the air feels thick, like someone’s perpetually breathing through a damp sponge. the humidity is clinging to everything - my camera, my socks, my sanity. it’s 26.43 degrees, feels like 26.43, temp min 26.43, temp max 26.43, pressure 1009, humidity 10, sea level 1009, grnd level 963. yeah, that’s the science. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.

Valoria itself is built into these crumbling sandstone cliffs, like a giant’s discarded teeth. it’s all winding alleys and shadowed plazas, and the buildings are painted in these faded, almost bruised shades of purple and ochre. it’s not pretty in a postcard kind of way, but it’s got a pulse. a weird, dusty, slightly unsettling pulse.

I’m staying in this place called ‘The Crooked Lantern’ - it’s basically a converted stable. the owner, Silas, is a retired percussionist who mostly communicates through grunts and the occasional clang of a cymbal. he keeps offering me pickled onions. i politely declined. several times.

I spent the morning wandering around the marketplace, which is a total sensory overload. spices I’ve never even heard of, vendors hawking everything from dried scorpion to hand-carved bone whistles. someone told me that the best place to get a decent meal is ‘The Serpent’s Bite’ - but I heard that’s only good if you’re into really, really spicy food. i’m leaning towards a sandwich.

I stumbled across this incredible little courtyard filled with these ancient, moss-covered statues. they looked like they were frozen mid-conversation. it was seriously creepy, but in a good way. i snapped a bunch of photos. my gear list is looking like a small apocalypse: camera, lenses (obviously), extra batteries (always a worry), a ridiculously large water bottle, and a notebook full of scribbled nonsense.

Speaking of gear, I’m seriously considering investing in a better lens. my current one is starting to warp reality. it’s giving me a headache. I need something with a wider aperture, something that can really capture the light in these shadows. Maybe a 35mm? Or a 50mm? Ugh, decisions.

I overheard some locals talking about a hidden underground network of tunnels - apparently, they were used during a siege centuries ago. someone told me that the tunnels are haunted by the ghosts of soldiers who died there. I’m not usually into that kind of thing, but… well, Valoria is full of surprises. I’m checking out the old city walls later.

I found a little cafe called ‘The Rusty Cog’ - it’s run by a woman named Elara who makes the most incredible cardamom coffee. seriously, it’s like liquid velvet. I’m pretty sure she’s a wizard. I also grabbed a map from the tourist board - it’s surprisingly detailed, considering the whole place looks like it’s about to collapse. You can check it out here: Valoria Tourist Board.

If you get bored, [Valoria] is just a short drive away. There’s a pretty decent brewery there, apparently. I’m not a huge beer guy, but I’m willing to try anything once. I also heard that the local pottery is amazing - I might pick up a souvenir.

Okay, I’m officially exhausted. I need to find a place to crash before I completely lose it. I’m thinking of checking out that hostel I found on Yelp - Valoria Hostel. Reviews are mixed, but it’s cheap. And sometimes, cheap is good. Especially when you’re running on fumes.

Seriously, if you’re planning a trip to Valoria, be prepared for the heat, the dust, and the general weirdness. But also, be prepared to be charmed. It’s a strange, beautiful place. Just… don’t ask me about the number 1566322480. It’s a curse.
